hello everyone!!

i'm experiencing some issues with VE PRO, and would hope that one (or more) of you fine ladies and gents might be able to lend a helping hand in figuring out what the problem might be. first off, this is my set up:

DAW01 - master
pc
intel core2 quad 2.6GHz
3GB ram
xp pro
cubase 3.1

DAW02 - slave
pc
intel core2 duo 2.94GHz
8GB ram
vista home premium 64bit
VE PRO

both machines are connected through a working gigabit hub, using cat6 cables.

so far so good, but here's the problem... i get RANDOM audio drop outs, some slight clicking, and stuck midi notes in VE PRO, even if i only play, lets say, some sustained notes in the string section. i've been trying to figure this out for days, and i'm slowly but surely running out of ideas. the drop outs seem to be completely random, and i was not able to find any correlation to cpu spikes, ram faults, buffer size, or anything else i can think of. daw02 cpu is running at maybe 15%, network is at 1-5%, ram is at 29% - so not even close to max. the only thing i was able to detect via the task manager, is that at every audio drop out, there's a very slight dip in the network usage on both daws.

btw: just before installing VE PRO, i tested the trial verison of VE3, which worked FLAWLESS.

so this is my call for help. if anybody has any ideas... let's have it. your help is most definitely very much appreciated.

thanx all!!!

I downgraded to DP 5.13 and the audio dropouts are gone. Not sure what you can do with your setup...

What latency setting are you running in Cubase, and what buffer setting are you using in the plugin? I also have to add that we have not tested any operation with Cubase 3.1, since it is now more than 4 years old...

kevin,

glad to hear that you got your problems sorted out. hopefully i'll be able to report the same in the not too distant future.

martin, thanx so much for your reply.

in cubase i usually run 256, but during the course of trying to figure this out, i have tried a variety of settings, starting at 128 all the way to 4096+. same thing with the plug in, i would usually run it at 2 buffers, but have also tried "no buffer" and "1 buffer." same result.

of course i realize that cubase 3.1 is not the most current version, but (for various reasons) i've held on to it since it is my " studio work horse," it's rock solid, and i've never experience any problems with it. do you think that upgrading to cubase 5 would do the trick? i don't really want to break up a working set-up, but if this is what's required to get VE PRO to work properly i'll bite the bullet.

please advise.

thanx,

hi martin,

just wanted to see if you (or anyone else, really) had any further input on this. i'm actually "trying" to work on a piece right now, with only one flute track playing in ve pro, latency in cubase is at 2048 samples (which is really unacceptable to record), 2 buffers in ve pro, and i'm still getting sporadic and completely random audio drop outs, clicks, and the occasional stuck midi note.

any advice would be very much appreciated - thanx!!

Hi,

I may jump in for Martin here...

I am working with Cubase 5 on quite a few machines, no troubles so far. If you have a chance, you might be able to "testdrive" Cubase 5 somehow (maybe one of your colleagues is using it?).

Hard to say if it will solve your problem, but I think you have a fair chance.

Best,

Paul

I'm willing to say no. I am using Cubase 5.1 and having clicks and dropouts even when only running VE Pro internally. Networking to other machines makes it worse, and I'm on an isolated secondary gigabit network for VE Pro exclusively.

The more I test this on numerous different computers, DAWs, and setups, the more hesitant I am to implement it because it kind of feels premature and experimental still.

I'm running seven VE PRO plugins in DP 7.1 and get these annoying audio dropout constantly. It is very annoying during work but also makes it very hard to record audio mixes, because I have to start over many times, and then I have to even resort to cutting and using different takes to get a good whole piece without audio dropouts.

I have Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 ghz xeon, 12 GB RAM, with Snow Leopard as host. Slave PC:s are 64-bit Vista and all have i7 processor and 12 gb memory. All updates have been installed in everything.

Just got the final word on what was causing the dropouts. I had DP set to "Pre-gen mode when possible" in the Preferences->Audio Plugins. It should have been set to "All plug-ins in real time."

Thanks to Matt from MOTU for solving this issue.

Hi,

I have a pretty similar setup to casual-t, and am running cubase 5. I'm getting very similar behavior while using VE Pro with East West's Play engine. Random dropped sustained notes. It can be working fine, and then randomly specific notes drop out. The dropouts always occur on the same tracks at the same point, but there is nothing in particular which triggers when it will happen or not. Once it happens once, I can't do anything to fix it short of reloading the project, but it inevitably happens again. Tried many things to no avail. Anyone else experiencing similar things? Is this just another VE Pro and Play incompatibility issue?

I tried running the same project only on my slave, with Play loaded directly into Cubase, and VE Pro hosting Kore 2 and experienced no dropped notes. Have yet to test it on the slave with VE Pro hosting Play.

Any one else having this problem with Play? Any insight would be great.

Thanks,
j.
