  • [SOLVED] VEP5 won't see instance on slave machine.

Hi .. i'm in big trouble.. i have a big job to do and i need a more powerful configuration than my mac pro for this. (many instruments to load) i decided to buy a supplementary pc with vienna ensemble pro 5. to load half of my samples on it. when i'm starting the vienna plug-in in protools, it sees the instance located on the mac (local host) but there is no way to see the Instance located on slave computer (pc) mac and pc are connected to each other by an ethernet cable, with manual addressing "10.255.255.1" for the pc and "10.255.255.2" for the mac. i have try to ping the mac from the pc... everything worked... i have access to pc "user's files" from mac via the network... everything seems to be set at it should, but the pc instance doesn't appear at all in the plug in server list. all firewalls are disable... .. i even have inactive ipv6 network in windows... If someone can help me.... cause i'm really ... really lost... and in hurry ... Thx everybody. Sylvain

  • Sylvain, I know it sounds silly but you must have the same updates of the VE server and VE Pro etc. on both machines? The PC version might be a version ahead or behind the Mac it is very important that they are exactly the same.

Also if the Mac is your master DAW then change the IP address config around making your MAC 10.255.255.1 and the PC 10.255.255.2 it might help.

If your seeing the PC and user files on the Mac and the PC sees the Mac then it doesn't sound like a Network connection issue. check with the above thats all I can offer I wish you luck.

  • In case you still can't see the slave, you can also try to enter the IP address manually in the VE Pro plugin to connect directly.

  • Hi ... thx for your help ... yes about the different version i saw yesterday that my mac version was older (as the update has just been released...) but i updated the mac and problem was the same .... i changed my pc and mac IP (10.255.255.1 for the mac and 10.255.255.2 for the pc) but i don't see the instance i created on the pc in the VE pro available instances... however.... when i'm typing the IP address manually in the plugin.... now it's creating an instance on the pc and it's connecting, when this was not working yesterday.... (and i have try this like 50 times....) and all i changed since yesterday is the order of IP addresses..... So it seems to work this way but i can't understand why i can't see the pc instances directly ... will i have to always type IP address like this in the future ? is it not supposed to work and see everything by itself ? Thx Sylvain

  • Hi sgenevay,

there's one thing that comes to my mind what you could try...
I do not really know how VEP communicates on the network layer, but maybe it's using network broadcasts which might get confused by your network addresses. The '255' (more precisely: all bits set in a given 'rest' field of an IP address) normally is ised as a broadcast address (e.g. to find computers in a network) and as a ground rule this 'address-part' should not be used in normal IP addresses.

To cut a long story short: try to use IP addresses without '255', e.g. 10.254.254.1 and 10.254.254.2. the netmask should remain, for example 255.255.255.0.
That's just guessing and I may be totally wrong with my estimation, but the address change would not make anything worse.

    Hth,

  • This is so strange.... i have try this but with no success.... the plug in doesn't see the instance .... and it's worse cause i can't get connected via manual IP either ... the problem is ... when i came back to my old 10.255.255.1 / 10.255.255.2 ups ... i don't have access anymore !! ARGH !!! i'm lost... Sylvain

  • That's really odd indeed. Let me recap

    - you are using for the Mac 10.255.255.1 and the PC 10.255.255.2

    - the network is a gigabit network

    - your Mac can ping the PC and vice versa

    - each computer can mount the shares/exports from the other machine

    - there's no firewall which might block incoming/outgoing connections

    - VEP neither 'sees' the other machine nor can it connect via given IP address, even after a reboot

Have you checked http://community.vsl.co.at/forums/p/29058/187656.aspx ? I am running out of ideas...

  • Hi again ... all this is correct... network between Mac and PC seems to be fully operational... it's just as if VEP was not seeing network... maybe the only thing i can think about is that i'm using a straight (and not crossed) ethernet cable ... but then why it would have work this morning ? i checked the link you gave me but this guy had more a save problem than real network problem ... what i really don't understand... is that it was working, and then i wangled the IP that you gave me ... and then when i went back to the first ips... nothing worked anymore... but i didn't change anything else !!! :( i'm plugged straight to the ethernet 1 port to the pc (i've try the #2 but it's the same...) i even deactivated my wifi connection for the mac to not confuse.... Really it's just like if VEP didn't wanna see the network.... my i activate a share or anything on mac ? (i have activate file sharing to check network... but nothing else...) thx for your help.

  • You're right, usually you don't need a crossover cable in a gigabit LAN - particularly with regard to the working connection this morning.

I'm puzzled... hopefully one of the seniors here can jump in and help

  • yes that would be nice. :-/ cause i start thinking i bought an extra pc and a VEP for nothing .... can't understand why it's not as easy as it look like regarding to the user manual .. :-/ but thx for your help anyway...

  • DAMN !!!!!! Little Snitch...... !!!! ok guys ... sorry for have stupidly disturb you... i have check everything but forgot i had "little Snitch" switched on.... and for unknown reason... it was stopping protools connection.... i authorized the connection back and everything is working well now... Thx Ewo for your help, your last message with the list made me think about it... Best Regards.

  • Luckily you found it... I was close to belive in witchcraft and wizardry  [;)]

    Much fun and success

  • thx u :) damn this software is simply incredible.... once it's launched.... :) Sylvain

  • I'm glad the issue was solved, but a variation of this problem remains for me. My host is a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and Logic. The slave machine is a new Mac Mini Server running Lion. All versions of VEPro are the same. When I load VEPro into Logic, it won't display any instances from the Mini Server. If I manually establish a connection, it works fine, but obviously is a pain and extra work, especially when starting new projects. Both machines are on static IP addresses, etc. I've tried 64 and 32 bit variations: neither will display instances. If I run VEPro Server within the host Mac, the plug-in will see those "internal" instances.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Hi, did you try turning off all wifi devices, for some reason this can get in the way of instance broadcasting, but will still let you manually connect.

  • on the Macmini you must set it 1st with "using DHCP", note all the figures and set it to "manually" and key all the values you have noted [:)]

  • Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I had turned wifi off on both machines, and it didn't fix the issue.

  • Thank you: I tried this, but it doesn't fix the issue. I can still manually connect to the new IP address, though.

  • What are the IP of the master and the slave ?

  • Mac Pro (master) is 169.254.173.204

    Mac Mini (slave) is 169.254.193.224
