  • Windows 8

I'm getting a PC for VEPro/VIPro/Play/Kontakt etc as a slave to my main DAW.

Thoughts on O.S. appreciated. (Windows 7 Pro vs Windows 8)

    Thanks,

    Hakan

  • Windows 7.  Windows 8 is so new that no one is going to be ready for it.  All developers will be playing catch up and patch fix break.  If this computer is nothing but a fun toy for you to mock up a little here and there and mostly browse the web, then go Windows 8 because you won't really care if a driver is broken or VST Plug-in has no support.  If you have any desire to use this to make serious music or run as glitch free as possible go with Windows 7 (which based on your question you said VE PRO and PLAY etc).  You will save yourself a lot of grief.  And Windows 7 has been incredibly stable and performance is just awesome.  I completely vote for Windows 7 only.

    Hope that helps.

  • Hi,

The question is : did VSL team test the Vienna softwares with the release candidate of windows 8 ? The update offer to windows 8 pro for 30€ only  seems to be a good opportunity to cross over the limits of 16Go (windows 7 home premium)

    Best

  • Thank you, cgernaey. Windows7 it is.

  • I tend to agree that unless there is a huge feature advantage to Windows 8, I would stick to Windows 7 Professional. Don't get me wrong, I will be changing both Studios over to Windows 8 at some point, particularly as I like the idea of having a tablet with a proper OS that is compatible with all my software, but it is far to early to contemplate that now, IMO.

Even if VSL has run successful tests, will your DAW of choice be ready? Will plugins you depend on be ready?

All it takes is one vital piece of your workflow not to behave as expected. I'm with DG and the others on this one but to an extreme.

I do not upgrade unless or until I have to.

P/S: the price is right, If it's boxed buy it and place it on the shelf for a few months.

This would seem to be a good question, but from what I hear from many developers, it can be a total waste of time to test with an unreleased OS. There are so many examples where things in the RC are changed for the actual release, that I am told that it is a waste of time and money for a small developer. Much better to wait until the OS has actually been released.

I happened to read a thread on Gearslutz, comparing performance on Win8 vs Win 7. Looks like Win 7 is the way to go, still.

  • Thanks, Martin!

  • Hi,

well, after making a backup of my system, i upgrade today to Windows 8 pro. Absolutly no problem. Everything is ok (using Cubase 5, Mir pro and vienna suite, altiverb ...). It seems stable so far. No problem of performance, may be even a little faster (or just a feeling ?). Sibelius 7 and Finale 11 seems to work fine too. I will give you news next days about stability.

But be careful : if you come from Windows 7 pro, you loose the applications (you keep all only when you come from Home premium - crazy !!!).

And now, i can enjoy the 32 Go of memory ...

    Best.

  • Thanks for sharing your experiences, Philippe! Good to hear that the transition was more or less seamless.

  • Thanks, Philippe!

Please report back your results if you use VEPro, Kontakt and/or Play.

  • Hi Hakan,

VEPro, Kontakt 4 and 5 work fine. I have Wallander VST plugins too, no problem with them. After 1day 1/2 of intense using, no crash.

So, just good news ... [;)]

    Best.

  • Initially, I had no audio output from VI Pro with ASIO.  Just swtiching to Windows Audio and back to ASIO fixed the issue.

  • To any and everyone in this thread:

Two years ago, I bought Vienna Special Edition and VSE Plus, which came with Vienna Instruments v.2.0.  At the time, I intended to move from my old XP to a 64-bit, Windows 7 machine . . . but composing time got in the way [:)], and I never even opened any of the software that I'd bought at that time, which included the VSE, Cubase 5, and Notion 3.

However, hardware obsolescence has finally caught up with me (Skype won't work well on my single-core CPU!), and I'm trying to decide whether to go to Windows 8 (which friends are saying is working beautifully for them) or 7.  Should I go to 8,  I will have to upgrade Cubase and Notion, but I'm not sure what will be required with VSE and VSE plus.

If someone in the know would be kind enough to tell me what would be involved, in taking my VI 2.0 and VSE libraries to Windows 8, I'd be most grateful!

    Thanks, in advance -

    Michael

  • I have tried Notion SLE, it is ok for small score but not for big ones

    Hi, Cyril;

Do you mean the Notion part of the equation, or the SLE part?   If the former, what app do you use?

  • Hi Michael,

It looks like it is Notion that is not powerfull.

For the moment I am waiting for Logic X and if the Logic Score in Logic X does not interface completly with VSL I will have to find a solution.

For the moment I have heard that the score of Cubase 7, Sibelius and Finale are interfacing with VSL.

But I have not tried them yet

  • Thanks, Cyril, I'll keep that in mind.

Now, if anyone can tell me what I'll have to do to make my VSE and VI v2.0 compatible with Windows 8, I'd be most grateful!

  •  Everything works just fine in Win8.  You don't have to do anything.  You don't have to upgrade Notion, and probably not Cubase, though I don't use that, so just a guess.
