  • Dimension strings 1: Vienna Instruments or Vienna Instruments Pro

    Hi,

I'm thinking about buying Dimensions strings 1, and would like to know if I have to buy Vienna Instruments Pro for this library or if I can use Vienna Instruments which is installed with my Vienna Ensemble Pro?

I thank you by advance for your answers

    Hello Stan,

Vienna Instruments work fine with Dimension Strings, but of course you will get many more options with Vienna Instruments PRO (also to load more instruments in one player, and of course Humanize is a great feature in this regard).

Check out these videos to get an idea how VI PRO can be used with Dimension Strings.

You can also order a free demo license for VI PRO to check out the features.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hello Paul,

thank you for your quick answer and your advices and links.

I'm going to watch these videos.

  • Stan,

I just purchased DS1 and think it is the finest library I've ever used.  I think Ensemble Pro AND Instruments Pro are a must.  I purchased the full library.

Techniques/features for doing mockups I have found particularly useful:

    -Velocity X-fade

-Slot X-fade (useful for forte-piano crescendos, fast tremolo to slow tremolo, etc)

    -Recording each player individually

-Humanize settings, and creating specific tunings for each articulation

    -Time stretching

  • Thank you Stephen.

Actually, the possibilities you are describing are very interesting, and I'm especially very interested in velocity X-fade and slot x-fade. Now I hesitate between Dimension Strings and String Orchestra ( I can't afford both). Do you only use Dimension Strings?

    Best,

    Stan

  • I'm only using DS1 now, yes.

Another benefit is being able to do proper divisi passages.  There is different thread below that I started about that.

Westlake Pro also has a video series on VSL... I think there are 10 total videos, each about 10mins each.

One other thing, DS takes a fast machine to be able to run properly and not have polyphony issues, so you may find yourself bouncing to audio and deactivating your Violin 1 instance while you track Violin 2 IF you're working on a slower machine.

  • I have a Mac Pro 2013 with 64g RAM. It's ok, insn't it?

With DS1, how do you do when you need strings playing ponticello? I didn't see that in the list of samples for DS1

Thank you for the link. I'm going to watch it

    Hello,

I found a solution to have Dimension Strings and Ponticello:

    I bought Dimension Strings full library 1 + SE Strings Vol.1 + SE Strings Vol.1 plus 😃

    Thank you everybody for helping.

    Best,

    Stan.
