I noticed in Cubase that there are two versions of the Vienna Ensemble Pro VST, one "regular" and one with /// three slashes next to it. Through trial and error I've discovered that the /// allow for multiple midi ports per instance and the VST without the slashes is limited to a single midi port. It seems both are able to access all 32 audio channels.

So my question is, resource wise, which should I use? Of course there are times when I need mutiple ports so I will load the /// version, but what about for instances where I only need one port? Does it make resource sense to load the non-slash one for these? On a related note, I NEVER use all 16 midi ports, but all 16 midi ports show up in cubase (see attached picture). Is there a way to limit these so not all of them show up? It gets a bit overwhelming seeing all these ports when using multiple VE pros (my picture only shows one and its even overwhelming!)

Thanks in advance for your help and reply,

Jon

VST 3 (the ///) can use less resources, depending on your Preferences in Cubase.

You can set the number of MIDI ports in VEP Preferences.

I see you can set the midi ports globaly, but can you set them per instance of VE pro? Thank you very much for your ultra fast reply! You actually replied while I was still looking for my screenshot to upload, lol!!

Do you mind going into a bit more detail on what prefernces may reduce the resources for VST 3 (or where I can find this information)? As given that there is only one port with the VST 2 version I would have assumed it used less resources. (glad I posted!!) Thanks again!!

  1. AFAIK the number of Ports is set globally.
  2. There is a setting in Cubase that allows you to use less resources when there is no audio passing though a plug. Unfortunately because the actual plugs in VEP are only VST2 this is of limited use, but there are times when an instance may not be in use, and the VST3 version can remove resources from the whole instance.

Caveat. I have no access to my studio today, so can't check up where the Pref is, and as I used Nuendo 6, it might have changes in later versions of Cubendo.

I found the preference in question for anyone following along. Preferences -> VST -> Plug-ins -> Suspend VST3 Plug-in processing when no audio signals are received.

Thanks again for your help DG!!
