Hi everybody,

From the opera "Les Fêtes de Paphos" by the 18th century French composer Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville (younger contemporary of Jean-Philippe Rameau) the final two airs.

De Mondonville was quite famous at his time, but he is now an almost forgotten composer.

Here are two Airs (Zéphir cherche Flore (Air sans lenteur), Les regrets de Zéphir (tres lentement) and Air très gay*)

* this is NOT English...

The ensemble consists of 8 dimension violins in 4 desks, 2 flutes, 2 violas, 2 cellos, 1 double bass, harpsichord. All VSL full.

Setting: Teldex Berlin and small church, with the Vienna Suite

Have a nice listen and comments are as always very welcome.

Those sound really good - the second is a great little piece, very rollicking and sprightly.

Thank you Musiksculp and William.

De Mondonville is great and deserves to be in the musical spotlights again. I'm glad you liked the VSL performance.

Hi Max,

nice rendition of this piece of a great composer, contemporary of Rameau. His "motets" are awesome.

There is a beautiful recording of "Les fêtes de paphos" by Christophe Rousset and his orchestra "Les talents Lyriques" ...

Best.

Philippe.

Thanks Philippe,

Indeed, De Mondonville is a very underestimated composer (not at his time). I'm glad I've brought him into the spotlights again. Hopefully there's many more of his music to come on this forum. Luckily a good number of good recordings have been made by famous baroque ensembles and his motets are absolutely fantastic (and original in many ways).

Hope to hear from you soon!

Max

Hi

Today I've posted a revisited version of the tunes. Same link as above.

Some more dynamics and subtle tempo changes.

All the best,

Max
