  • Faure's Pavane - Special Edition

Jay Bacal just send us this wonderful Special Edition demo,
the famous "Pavane" by Gabriel Faure

    http://vsl.co.at/Player2.aspx?Lang=13&DemoId=5011

As usual Jay is supporting his mockup with midi and presetfiles, so everybody who owns Special Edition can load this performance on his sequenzer.

    Thanks a lot Jay!

  • A truly wonderful performance of this beautiful piece. Thanks Jay for sharing the demo files! I'm sure I won't be the only one benefiting from them [[;)]]

And thanks too Herb. I just received my Special Edition yesterday and I can't leave it alone. [:D] I already had the Opus Bundle and I'm still very happy with that but the VI is just marvellous. It makes for an altogether much more enjoyable (and quick) process in laying down tracks. I'd seen the videos and read all about it before, but you have to get your hands on it to truly appreciate the quantum leap (if you'll forgive the expression!!) in technology that you guys have made!

Well done & Bravo to you and your team!!! [H]

    Best regards,

    John

I spoke to soon - "I can't leave it alone" is what I said but after spending a couple of deliriously happy hours this morning getting to grips with the VI's capabilities wonderfully aided by Jay's demo files, I turned the computer off only to return a couple of hours later to find it wouldn't boot again!
I'm sure it's an OS or HD problem and nothing to do with the VI, but this is a 6 month old machine. Trouble is I'd had loads of problems with a previous machine - that's why I bought this new one!

Fortunately it's under warranty but I'm going to be without it for at least a week while it's being repaired. If there's one thing worse than being without your DAW it's being without it 2 days after you receive a new library!! [6]

Listening to Jay's superb rendition of the Faure Pavane takes the heat out of the situation, for a while anyway - mmm but it sure make me want to get back on that VI.

    Ah well... such is life.
& I wrote this edited bit without using bad language!!!! How's that for restraint? - the house is ringing to the strains of some pretty foul obscenities though!

  • Hi Jay,

Thanks heaps for doing this demo!! Beautiful!! Wow!!

I'm not only impressed by the realism and expression of the woodwinds, but the strings also sound so expressive and your phrasing of the melodic lines is so well shaped and musical. I am listening as I write this [about the 4th listening now], and to me the strings - they just sound beautiful.
It's also so generous of you to post the tutorial with this. Thank you for that also.

I'm guessing that you are layering the strings section with the solo strings?

I'm also curious to know what reverb you are using?

Thank you again Jay for posting this demo. It really makes me want to achieve the same realism in my music demo's also.

    best regards,

    Steve [:D]

  • It's simply superb :
-the composition is great for one thing,
-the way it's sequenced and rendered makes me totally desperate to do something someday which would be just "close" in quality,
-the choice of the space is tasteful and gives life and this lovely sound and natural breathe to the instruments....
I was pretty unsure to upgrade from Opus to SE, but (unfortunately for my budget....) this piece makes me reconsider.
    ****
Now, my only reservation remains with the licensing scheme : one VI license = 1 computer authorization, right ?
So, I'm a bit scared about what one VI like SE (a whole orchestra and more...) on one computer can really handle :
With Opus, I can share the orchestra between my 2 K2 PCs... 2 computers of course double the hassle, but also give some power.
With SE, it seems that I would gain in workflow, but what would be the loss in terms of load amount ?
Will I still have to use K2 and a 2nd computer, or is one SE able to handle a full orchestration ?

  • Jay,

You show that when good taste is well applied great achievements are possible, an excellent example of SE.

Maybe so slightly more rev on the flute, seems a bit dry, but that's a personal thing.

  • It's great to hear Jay's v. well-executed rendition of this beautiful piece. When I first got Pro Edition I had a go at it myself so I was particularly interested in this. Right now I am considering buying the Cube and bought the Special Edition as a taster. I also downloaded Jay's tutorial to see if my Mac could handle custom layered presets. Jay has about 30 here which I could not load without 'optimising' each instrument for more memory. Which brings me to ask how does Jay or others for that matter manage it? I got as far as loading 10 of his instruments and my Mac was looking maxed out. 'Activity Monitor' reported 'VSL-Server' using 1.81 GB, Logic 378 mb, and (for some reason) only 110 MB's free remaining memory. I did get around this by optimising in te end. Also I'd like to have got hold of a tempo map. Anyway thanks a lot Jay, that's helped me a lot. How about some rousing Beethoven next!? (That's what's I'm planning for my next experiment)

  • A quick question. In the midi files I notice there is the usual keyswitch info @ C0 and also another note slightly before @ C-1 What's this for? (I'm learning)
Another thing I didn't realise you could use the same patch at the same time on 2 separate VI's (ie. 2 bassoons, 2 flutes etc.) I guess that's ok then.

  • Patrick-- the very low notes are keyswitches-- they signal the VI player to switch articulations. Yes, you can use the same patch in multiple instances. Just try to avoid using the same patch and same note-- this may cause some phasing. The tempo map should be part of the midi file.

Steve-- strings have lots of layering-- in fact, I layered all available kinds of strings: solo, chamber, orchestral and appassionata (sustains only). Reverb is Altiverb LA Philharmonic IR.

Guy-- yes, woodwinds could be a touch too dry and forward. But I liked it. [[;)]]

    Best,
    Jay
