  • VI SE or Woodwinds 1 Standard?

Hi everyone I thought I chime in very quickly and ask I guess a question everyone from time to time needs the answer to about the direction of a purchase....I've done a lot of reading/searching on the VI SE comments and it sounds wonderful. However i am embarking on a new instrumental project and before I make the investment into future purchases with VIs I want to know what some of the pros would suggest. I was seriously looking at the SE, yes it has a good croos section of instruments but i'm worried that I wont have have enough articulations with the woodwinds... I really need good woodwinds, would the SE suffice for most writing or are the Woodwinds 1 standard better as a way to start for a solid investment into the future? Lately with my purchases I'm starting to think that quality is better than quantity......not doubting for a moment that the SE is'nt great...just curious what the pros are doing and using. Thanks.

  • Hi Joseph,

You'll probably find that a lot of the pros have more money than sense (I mean that in the nicest possible way) and don't have to think too hard about making these dire financial decisions.

It really depends on how important the project is to both you and your client - can you get away with slightly less than absolute perfection on this occasion? Many do. The chances are that your client will be so blown away by the sound quality and your compositional skills that they would never notice the difference anyway. [H]

I don't have the SE, having purchase the first part of the Cube a few months earlier [:'(] , but it certainly looks like it gives you a very full pallette of sound and a very solid start to your library for very little outlay. It's already been demonstrated that great things can be created with it alone. You will just find that you have to resort to 'faking' a lot of the dynamics rather than switching to the perfect articulation. The main Woodwinds collection will obviously allow you to vary the articulations much more, as you will find many more colours to play with for even basic short and long notes - allowing you to get the attack or amount of vibrato just right for each phrase.

I think if I was starting out and on a budget I would definitely go with the SE and build from there, as it will give you many more options for your next project and may be all you need. Or just do what the pros would do and buy both [:D]

    Have Fun!

    Colin

  • All things considered you're best bet would be WW's I because you will have the complete articulations which you will wish you had when in the creative mode. Very good investment both musically and financially.
