  • No Mutes in Epic Horns??

Did I miss something when reading about Epic Horns....is it true that there are no muted horn samples in this offering?

  • I've had the same uneasy feeling that VSL aren't keen to record brass with mutes. I can't understand why. There's such an obvious need for it. Instead we get 'extras' like glissandi, or runs. How many times can you get runs to work in your piece, compared to the number of times you could use muted brass?!

    MUTED BRASS PLEASE>>>SOON.

  • Yes - I agree. Muted brass is very demanded! Perhaps it will be part of the symphonic cube? And another expense for the users? [[:|]] Don't hope so!

  • I think you mean stopped instead of muted?

  • I meant this technique, which (I believe is used more often than playing with mutes): http://vsl.co.at/english/instruments/brass/horns/horn_in_f/playing_techniques/STOPPED.htm

  • I'd say that it was about even, Peter. Both muting techniques are used extensively. The hand-stopped type is perhaps more obvious to the ear because of its very thin, piercing sound. But the metal-mute is used all the time, although the sound is more subtle. Look at any modern score, eg Alban Berg, and you'll see liberal sprinklings of "con sord" or "con sordino" in the horn/T-bones parts. That's the metal mute. Berg often doubled them up with pizz strings in forte passages to startling effect.

Anyway, VSL is about due to release a very comprehensive mute library... well, I certainly hope so. [:)]

    Cheers
    Heath

  • No mutes doesn't make any sense to me either. It would be nice to get an explanation of why they were omitted.

Yes, actually Peter, my initial post meant what you point out, the "stopped" technique. Is this missing from Epic horns as well?

  • Interesting thread.

I think about getting muted brass daily. One of the main reasons is Alban Berg's perfect use of them (all brass.) It's such a great sound.

It seems to me that stopped horns are far more common in most literature.
Mahler would support a stopped horn with a regular horn to counter the thin quality mentioned above.

Two good questions here: are there stopped horns in the Epic Horns and is there an approximate release date for muted brass?

    "HO_sto_sforz_sfz_G_4.mp3"
    "HO_sto_stac_ff_G_3.mp3"

Oh it seems there is already a "vsl architecture" to that samples names.
i'm sure they will release that types of samples soon... ( may be in the symphonic cube but to be honest, i would not want to buy the symphonic cube just for muted brass

  • This is the complete list of the Epic Horns articulations:

    http://www2.vsl.co.at/shop/instruments.asp?Lang=1&TopNav=2&SubNav=5&Menu=16&Detail=1&Region=1

VSL does not yet offer any muted or stopped French Horns, as far as I could determine from the articulation lists.

  • It would have been perfect to have them included within EPIC HORNS!
    It is really a shame!

Anyway: just to put this question: WHAT HAVE INSTRUMENTS (updates) LIKE Clarinet Eb and piccolo runs to do with FRENCH OBOE???
I am sorry - they should have been update releases for at least Pro ed users!!!! It is a shame that one has to buy a (as you said "completely new")
libraray just to get missing articulations as well! To me it feels a little disappointing, since VSL always does I wonderful job!

  • don't worry Matt i'm sure they will solve the problem like they will solve the 2nd violins issue etc.
