  • MOTU DP 6

    Hi

I see that MOTIU have announced DP 6 at NAMM, it looks awesome. I was using DP with Vienna and moved over to Logic last year, but I think it may be time to go back to an old friend!!!

    Pics Here : http://public.fotki.com/lwilliam/namm-2008/

Here are some of the highlights.

    1) MAJOR OVERHAUL OF UI. Apparently the UI has been overhauled significantly. A cleaner look and actually Jim said it's "lighter" in appearance... not as dark as before.

    2) TRACKS OVERVIEW VERTICALLY SCALEABLE. At last for those of us tired of squinting at 9 pt Geneva, the Tracks Overview is scaleable.

    3) COLORED WAVEFORMS. My prayer answered. The colored bar at the top of the soundbites that seemed like a kludge are gone. I'm assuming waveforms can also be full height of soundbite now.

    4) NEW INCLUDED PLUG-IN: MW LEVELER. This apparently, according to MOTU is an outright emulation of an LA-2A and will be included with DP.

    5) NEW INCLUDED PLUG-IN: CONVOLUTION REVERB. I think Jim said this was called "ProVerb" and is a convolution reverb. Apparently it comes with a lot of IRs and can import them as well. Monkey man... I know this was something you've wanted.

    6) EXPLODED TAKES VIEW. I don't know exactly how this works, but apparently DP now can explode the takes in a track and easily create comp tracks from multiple takes. Very cool.

    7) HD VIDEO FRAME RATE SUPPORT. New version supports the HD video frame rate now.

    8) VIs CAPTURED DURING BOUNCE TO DISK. There's no need to print VI's to audio tracks before bouncing to disk. Very cool!!!

    9) PRE-RENDERING FOR VIs. Not sure how this works, but VIs have pre-rendering making DP much more efficient when working with multiple VIs. I don't know what effect this has on making lower buffer settings when tracking VIs practical, but I have high hopes.

    10) ABILITY TO BOUNCE DIRECTLY TO CD. There is an option to bounce and burn directly to CD from DP without the need for Toast or 3rd party app.

    12) EUPHONIX CONTROL SURFACE SUPPORT. MOTU had the new Euphonix control surfaces on display with DP at their booth. Currently they work in some sort of Mackie emulation, but MOTU stated that drivers for direct support of Euphonix comm protocol are being developed.

    13) TIGHTER INTEGRATION WITH FINAL CUT. Not sure of this one... Jim didn't hear it to well, but there's some sort of tighter ability for moving files between FCP and DP. Something about DP being able to read an XML file or something. My apologies... this should all start becoming clear when MOTU publishes this on their site and more and better information becomes available.

Looks cool, now all I need is Vienna Ensemble 3!

  • The reverb plug-in plus the VI plug-ins that come with it look great. I actually really like DP 5.13 except for how it renders/mixes down VI tracks to an audio file- at this point it's arcane to say the least. DP6 looks like it wil fix this. I'm very excited as the notation (Quickscribe) editor on DP still remains the best notation transcription of any DAW I have encountered- and I have them all!

I'm just highlighting this one as I think it is potentially a big deal for VSL users.

Here is a video of the NAMM presention of DP6 (part 1 of 4 parts)

  •  I hate to necro a thread, but has anyone bought this and have some time with it?

Some of the features make it feasible for me, even over Logic. Workflow seems a lot better.

  • I've been using DP 6.x since July 2008 (I am now on DP 6.01), and even though my machine does not technically meet its requirements, I am finding that it performs better for me than version 5.13, and the new fonts and rendering are easier on my eyes, causing less strain.

The new workflow is way more flexible and adaptable, with just the right amount of built-in redundancy (i.e. shortcuts from one context to another), and it's much easier to manage on small screens now (and think how that scales to large screens!).

My personal throughput on DP 6.01 is probably 4x what it was on version 5.13, due to the new implementation. It's all second nature to me by now, and I really don't think of it so much as new "features" anymore as it's so intuitive and smooth.

I turn all pre-rendering off, as my machine can't handle it. SOS claims it helps a lot, on a powerful machine. They also wrote last month (or the month earlier) about track comping, which isn't listed in the manual under such terminology so is a bit of a "hidden feature".

Audio Units compliance is better than before, so the previously problematic plug-ins behave better now.

There are some quirks, of course, but even 6.01 fixed many of the ones in the original 6.0.

I do occasionally have to add silence to "zero" some of my tracks, for proper BTD. And I more frequently have to do stem submixes if I have a lot of plug-in effects, vs. just doing a single BTD. But I have an ancient G4 iMac, so this is to be expected. DP6's basic footprint is larger than DP5's.

As for Vienna Instruments, I am really noticing the sample-accurate MIDI rendering in DP6. It was close already in previous releases, but I occasionally had to do time shifts. No longer. Re-tracking a small project from scratch, with no edits, produced better results in DP6.
