  • Legato/Portamento really hard to play :(

Does anyone else have a really hard time actually getting legato samples to trigger when they play? Sometimes we'll play fingered legato(not sustain pedal) and legato samples will trigger, other times they won't. Even playing a passage the first few notes will be legato and then it stops, on all instruments. Also, we only get portamento when we play a note, hold it down, play another note, let go of the second note and we get port from the second note to the first. This means we can't ever have port from one note to another without preceding it with another note. Say we want port from a C4 to a G3...we currently have to play G3(hold), C4(play and release)...but that means we have to play a G first when we actually wanted a port just from C-G. Can someone please better explain the proper playing technique/programming or these patches? I really appreciate any help/advice anyone has thank you!!! kayla

  • hmm... I'm not sure what's up. If anything, I find legato too *easy* to play, in that you have to leave a definite space after each note to avoid the legato transitions (wish this could be set). Normally, you should literally just play "joined-up" notes on your keyboard to get legato transitions - that is, assuming you've loaded a legato patch! ;-)

You mention the sustain pedal, but you don't need it for legato. Just play. Any notes that are directly following one another, or overlapping slightly, will trigger the legato transitions. The "mono synth" effect you're talking about is a new feature which makes it easier to play trills, and fingered tremolos, using the legato patches. It's just like the old mono synths, where the last note of all held notes is always played upon release of a more recent note (that's a mouth full...). As far as portamento is concerned, it's played the same way as legato, but it does use a different cell - you generally have to use the mod wheel, or some other controller, to move from standard legato to portamento...

Hope this helps somewhat, though I don't think it will. Gulp.

    J.

  • Post a MIDI file where "it" doesn't work and then one where "it" does. There is no problem on either of my systems, so I think there is a mix-up somewhere at your end.

Yes - just make sure all your notes overlap, otherwise you won't trigger the legato or portamento effect. (It's just the way the player works.) It's actually quite hard to make all the notes in a melody overlap with each other because we don't naturally play that way.
