  • Will LOGIC 8 and VSL play nice together now? It seems EWQLSO does not...need advice.

EWQLSO= I cannot get it to work. I did some research and was it looks like you need Kontact 3 or at least 2 player as the player that ships won't work. So, I have player 2 and Kontakt 3 and both say the library is not registered even though it says registered and I have started the device several times (and it plays as standalone).... Anyway, nutshell, don't mind shelling out some $$ for Gold, or above, IF, and thats, IF I can get it to work. ******** HOWEVER, some say while VSL is better after setting up, HOW EASY is it to set up AND does it still have problems? Read that some are still having problems........*********** So two IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: • Ease of use out of box with good reverb • Problems with Logic and multiple instances, how much CPU does a new duo core 2 2.4 have in terms of power - 4 GB ram. My reading at the Apple forum makes me leery - (EWQLSO) as many seem to be having this problem. It works fine in stand alone but not in Kontakt 2 player, or K3 full. On K2 player, message=can't use (thinking its thinking not registered), k3=it says not registered and please open at least once (I did), I copied the Contents.plist to librarie/preferences, still no go... also, of interesting note, It never asked me (like it did on the PC), where to install the samples, I had to mannualy move file manually.....on the PC, I remember it asking WHERE it wanted me to install the libraries (I think). Please help as I am deciding between platinum or VSL SE Extended. Thanks Will post over at apple and see what they suggest and if I find a fix, will post. Otherwise, advice appreciated. (Searching in Apple, I only found the Contents.plist FIX which did not work for me......and many seem to have this problem.

  • To answer it easy for you, YES, VSL and Logic 7 &/or 8 work fine together. The problem I had with EWQL is that it is not universal application, so I could not get it to run on my Intel mac. It worked fine in my iMac G5, but nothing from apple released in the last 2 yeras. As for quality, VSL is much better sounding, and much easier to work with, compared to EWQL (I had gold). The Legato patches are excellent, and I don't think you will be dissapointed. As for which library to get, it really comes down to which instrument and articulations do you really need for your project / hobby. You can always build up a collection, but then again its fun to get as many as you can to play with. Hope this hoped.

    Hi Frankii.

If you take some time and read a few of the posts here you'll see that things do occasionally go wrong for Vienna users, but much of the time they're due to user errors or misunderstandings. Setting up isn't totally straightforward: with the Vienna Instruments collections you need a hardware Vienna key, you have to register the products you bought on VSL's site and download a license form Syncrosoft before installing the samples, then run the Directory Manager so the player can 'see' the patches. However, that's no more complicated than setting up EWQLSO, which got VERY confusing when they issued the Pro XP upgrade - the new patches wouldn't work with the old player and vice versa, and even with the full version of Kontakt there are still conflicts. (You have to register the EWQLSO library with Native Instruments, right?)

If anyone runs into a problem VSL's staff are brilliant and always do their best to help and the people who post here are very helpful too. With VSL products I don't think you'll end up with any insurmountable technical problem provided you ask the right questions.

As you probably know the two major differences between EWQLSO and VSL libraries are:

    1. EastWest's samples have a big concert hall reverb, VSL's are totally dry.

    2. The full Vienna Instrument collections have way more musical detail than EWQLSO and the legato patches are very effective.

  • You know, it does seem that it should work, but if you look at the tags for LOGIC (one of the more popular), there seems to be some issues. To be fair, some are old. So, have some of these issues been addressed? Here is the TAG search for LOGIC. Thank you. http://community.vsl.co.at/tags/Apple%20Logic/default.aspx

  • frank, just to throw some comments on the topic ...

if i'm looking at the statistics it seems our appr. 40% mac users are tending to use Vienna Instruments much more extensively than the majority of windows users and apple did in fact surprise (not only) us with a few things during the transition to leopard and logic 8, so it doesn't take me wonder when the majority of issues occure in this area ...

another thing mac users (especially of digital audio workstations) still have to get used to since the move to OS X is to keep the system straight and clean (eg. reboot before installing and/or updating and repair permissions after doing so) - some of this needs originate to the nature of unix-like systems ....

but following a few and basic rules makes this platform a very stable and performant solution for running Vienna Instruments (as any other stuff btw.) and our development team is carefully working on resolving the one or other left issue (eg. the 4 GB 32bit barrier)

eg. just yesterday we dicovered a bug in leopard related to the upcoming VE3 (vienna ensemble network) for which we have either to wait for an 10.5 update or offer a how-to for a workaround (well, more precisely: we didn't discover the bug since it is already known, we just ran into it ...)

hopefully this sheds some light on a possibly bad impression you might have been given ...
