  • VE3 memory allocation on 64 bit systems?

    Hi

    I'm contemplating Running Cubase 4 on a XP64 system w. 8 Gb and using VE3.

Cubase 4 is not yet 64-bit, so it can only use memory from the lowest 4 gb address space.

The question is how VE3 allocates memory from the pool?

If it just allocates from the bottom it will lead to a starvation of Cubase.

    ex.

Cubase starts up and allocates some memory from the pool in the low memory space - next VE3 starts up and loads say 4 gb of samples

If this is done from the bottom the situation becomes something like this

    Mem range

    0-400 Cubase and other stuff

    400-4400 VE3

Now you begin working with Cubase adding tracks, additional instruments and/or record - but for this Cubase will try to allocate

additional memory - but no memory in the first 4 gb is now available.

Is the above correct? And does'nt that render the extra memory useless in this situation?

  • Cubase has been 64-bit for six months or so.....

well - yes as a preview version ( must be another word for beta )  - right?

I'm not sure how well that performs - but maybe I should give it a try.

  • It's not beta, the confusion over "preview" comes from the fact that some things aren't working - like the third-party plugins for example. The actual engine works just fine.
