  • VE3 Crazy loud noise with mac and PC

Hi there, loving VE 3, just got it up and running, put it through some tests, and had about 8 instruments loaded. Started soloing tracks on the slave, and got an insanely loud blast of noise until I stopped the transport. Any ideas? 2 minutes ago I was gonna post here and say how mind-blowingly awesome this is, just need to get this hickup sorted and I will! My system is Nuendo 4.12 on Mac 8Core, with PC Vista 32 as slave. Could it be buffer related? Anyone else noticed this? Running at 512 right now. Was working great until I soloed tracks. Thanks for any help! jef edit: and if i don't solo anything in the slave it seems to be ok, i'm just a little nervous working with it now, waiting for the blast... but man, this is so amazing if i can rely on it!

  • So I worked with it for 5 hours with no crash and no noise... just thought I'd mention that! (and it's working perfectly)

  • I also get these every now and then. There are clearly issues with the VI/VE and it would be 'nice' if VSL responded to these issues. Noise bursts aren't just some minor quibbles. They have the potential or breaking some gear or even worse, someone's hearing.

If you are worried about damage to your equipment, then just put a limiter on the Master Output in your sequencer.

Regarding bursts of sound, I've never had this during playback; only on stopping the playback, and that was caused by a Preference in Nuendo. I would suggest that you contact support@vsl.co.at if you haven't already.

I've never had the noise problem with the VI plug-in by itself in Logic. I got the noise once with build 3238 when I was loading a Logic session file and Logic thought that VE3 was ready and I hit play on my Logic Control but VE was still loading instruments. Maybe Logic should have blocked the MIDI play command from the Logic Control?

I also heard the noise blast occasionally with earlier versions. When I looked at VE I noticed that the channel output was slammed for a channel that had an AU plug. When I removed the plug, the problem stopped. It was one of the Apple Au EQs. I don't usually use the Apple built-in AU plugs so I couldn't say if the problem was in the plug or in VE. But definitely not VI.

  •  To everybody who is experiencing this issue (-> occassional noise blasts in combination with Vi or VE):

  •  That's very good news.

  • Just to add to the data on sudden blasts of noise, I had this problem the other day. Like someone had pulled the mains plug from a piece of equipment that was still on. All music stopped but resumed a second after. Very stressful because you never know when it's going to come back. Intel Mac fastest one, Logic 8.

We are aware of this (rare) issue <snip>

Indeed, very rare in my experience. Twice in 4 months with several hundred hours of use. VE3 only, never with VE2.

Logic Pro 8 (current dot level)

    master (G5 Quad), 8GB

    slave (Macbook Pro Intel), 4GB

    OS 10.5 on both

  • Not sure if this is the same thing but. After many hours of rendering a string quartet file, I went to mix the final version and as soon as I did, I get sqwacks and stuttering for about 3 to 4 seconds before playback resumes normally. I rebuilt the file and the problem has reoccurred. I am using VE3 along with DP6.01 on a Mac G5 Dual Core with plenty of RAM (4Gb). I'm stumped and very reluctant to rebuild the file in an identical way until I read about some solution. Cheers PR

  • Same here. I've got DP 6.01 on a Mac Pro with 16GB RAM. I've been opening projects that ran fine 3 months ago and now Vienna is stuttering like mad for the first few bars. Also a lot of problems with long, sustained notes dropping out on (seemingly) other MIDI device events, like program changes and the like. I'm running the latest version of VE3 on two other Mac Pros with a gigabit router between the three machines. Didn't have any problems before. Maybe it's a DP 6 thing? I'm opening the same project in DP5 to check...will post again in a moment. Jason

  •  I too get the noise blasts once in a while. I noticed that it happens when you solo a channel in VE3 while the sequencer is playing. Once you un-solo it seems like all the tracks that were muted during the solowed track burst with all the data that was going into them during the solo. The noise is extremely loud! It once went into the headphones of a musician during the recording session, he jumped up and almost had a heart attack.

In other words do NOT solo VE while the sequencer is playing. It doesn't happen all the time, but once or twice is enough.

  • Wow, yeah, it was very loud! But as I said, it hasn't happened since (and I keep my mouse away from the VE3 solo button!) Been working with it now for a week and it's been amazing, I love it... what a great use for my old PC!

  • Hey Jason - We may be into a different problem than the main thrust of this thread, but I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this. I never had the problem with DP5. Did your test work? Hard to know if this is a DP6 thing or something weird in the way that VE3 is communicating with DP6, or what. I haven't found a solution yet. Paul

  • Paul, I didn't get a chance last night but will try today. Another very strange thing I noticed is patch changes on other instrument channels (local, standalone instances of Kontakt) are causes all the notes for VSL to cut off. I know that sounds really weird, but when I mute the offending Kontakt channels VSL plays fine, if I move the patch changes somewhere else VSL cuts off in the new location. What in the world? I'm also posting this as a new thread to see if anyone else has the same issue. Jason

  • Just played the same sequence in DP 5 and everything is fine. Jason

  • This is happening again, it is so not cool! Now it's happening when I am editing notes in Nuendo. Please, please, please fix this. Sorry, I'm a little upset by this! (and edited my original post... took out the acid, I'm not prone to being a forum ranter...)

  •  As I already posted before, this issue will be solved as soon as possible.

    Best regards,

    Maya
