    Hi everyone!

I've completed a recording of the last movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and would love to hear some feedback.

    Beethoven - 7th - IV

There is some bass enhancement going on. I'm especially curious to hear from those of you with good sub-woofers whether it's too much. And of course, any and all other comments are totally welcome, too. I think I learn more from you guys than many of the pro engineers I work with!

    Enjoy!

    Paul

  • Can't get it to play I'm afraid, but it could b my browser (Chrome) Still, from your other work Paul I'm sure it's excellent :D Really can't wait to hear this!

  • Very nice programming I have to say, and making a beethoven symphony is a tall order! My only qualm is that your pieces in general (except the OP59, which is my favorite sampled demo *ever* btw) always need MORE REVERB. I think this piece would sound tens times more realistic with more polarised depth placement. But hey, I'm just some guy, you see any demos from *me* around here?! It's still an excellent excellent job. I wish I could programme half as good as this. 9 thumbs up.

  • Sounds like a lot of hard work to me!  Agree with RM...excellent job and I'd settle for a third as good.

    OK...two fifths.

  • [cheeky]Also, if you were to post the midi file so us lesser beings could pick your brains that would also be awesome :D [/cheeky]

    ... MORE REVERB ...

Okay ... I made it more reverberous. Try listening again.

    Beethoven 7, IV

BTW, I always skimp on the reverb because I'm making these recordings to be played live in concert halls where the reverb mostly comes from the acoustic space. I must confess, though, that if I had Altiverb I would probably be making much better recordings. Well, for this, I'm just making do with Space Designer (part of Logic).

I'll post the MIDI file tomorrow. Meanwhile, let me know what you think of the latest reverberant version. (I think it's better, but somehow got a lot quieter. I need to get the sense of space without losing detail and power. I guess you can crank it up loud when you listen. 😉

  • Listening now. It's so good. *jealous* I see what you mean though about losing detail to the reverb, attacks and things are a bit dulled with the new reverb alright (and you NEED sharp attacks for 7-4!) I guess it's an age old problem. I love the vsl repetition samples and you've used them wonderfully here. Excellent violins programming I have to say. Do you do much automation in these pieces Paul?

  • Great work

How long did it took you to do it ?
Where did you got the score ?
Do you have this file in Logic's format ?

It took me four days to make the VSL orchestra parts and another day to do the mix/mastering.

Okay, so I have replaced the file yet again. As of today the recording has been re-mastered using Altiverb's Wiener Konzertsaal reverb sample.

Here is the audio: Beethoven 7th - IV. Allegro con brio (updated 12/18/08)

Here is the MIDI file (caution - it's full of keyswitching notes!!)

And, if you're interested, I also re-mastered the Andante from Beethoven's 1st symphony (updated 12/18/08) using the same hall settings.

As for the Logic format ... I'd rather not post that because it has all of my programming for my Wii-based conducting controller (which allows me to conduct the piece in real time, recording my tempo changes, etc.). Maybe the MIDI file will work for you, though.

  • Hello Paul

    Thanks for your answer.

I was interested to see your keyswitch technique in the Logic file ;o)

Did you use a Midi score to start, or did you use a paper score ?

What VSL do you use ? the big one ?

I did not know you could conduct Logic with a Wii ;o) , can you tell us more about it

    Best

    Hi Paul,

    Great job!

I would also like to hear more about how you are "conducting" the piece in real time using the Wii.  Very interesting.  If it makes it more intuitive to create tempo maps (I am trained as a conductor) than entering that info manually, then I will definitely want to look into this.
