  • Special Edition Timpani Roll

    Hi all,

I have problem with Special Edition's Timpani Roll patch: I need faster roll rate than the provided one. Is there anyone succeed in this workaround who don't mind to share the tricks?

My only thinking of the solution is to manually input the notes (yes, a lot of notes) of the Timpani patch to simulate the roll. But, as we all know, this is tedious (I tried to input the notes by MIDI export from Sibelius); and somemore the result is not satisfying when combined with velocity crossfader (the timpani tends to sound very harsh at the high velocity extreme, overwhelming the whole orchestra; and with lower velocity level it's to soft to show its teeth)

    So, anyone can help?

    Regards,

    Mario

  • Hi Mario

You could record the timpani roll as an audio file and then use time compression on it if it's available to you in your sequencer. I'm not sure if such a move would contravene the license as to whether this constitutes  tinkering with the original sample. I'm sure someone at VSL will let us know soon enough if so.

  • Hi Collin,

Thank you for the suggestion, but will the timbre be affected by the compression?

  • To be honest Mario, it's not a function I have ever used myself. I'd imagine that results will vary depending on the quality of the algorithms used in each particular sequencer/plugin.

  • I see, Colin. I should try with mine then. Thanks a lot! :)

  • hi mario,

    here's what i do:

play a roll manually at a lower tempo and then use a "time compression" tool on that midi event. i'm doing it like this in cubase all the time. it's very fast and sounds natural.

    all the best

  • Hi Steffen,

    Thanks for your input.

Currently I'm still concentrating on mixing other sections of the score (and refining all the timpani rolls later, not to hamper the progress). But definitely I will try your suggestion :)
