  • Serious issue

Sibelius is not saving my VSL playback setup, or is saving it to a location where it cannot find it.

The name of the setup is saved, but that's all. When I exit he program without turning off the computer, the setup is still there, but when i turn off everything is gone when I come back.

    I have Sibelius on a powermac g5, OS 10.5.5 (93F33)

VE pro an a 64 bit pc, standalone, midi over lan. (no problems there)

This totally kills productivity, hope you can help.

    Best,

    Gaute Storaas

  •  And, I use Sibelius 6.1, as recommended

  • Hello Gaute!

The Sibelius Playback Configurations are not saved with the score but in a seperate file and folder.
As a consequence please always save your Playback Configuration after making settings in Vienna Ensemble Pro.

Please remember to open Vienna Ensemble Pro Server on your slave computer, before you open Sibelius.

As a backup, you can also save your Vienna Ensemble Pro metaframe.

  •  Thank you for a quick answewr.

I am aware that the playback config is not saved with the score, I try to save it in the playback devices dialog in Sibelius.

On my VSL slave, I have set up a big template using 8 midi-ports in VEpro, that will cover all my orchestral needs, something  I will rarely need to change.

I use VEpro as standalone, so i am not using the vienna server at all. The slave is only getting midi, and when I have set up the playback config it works like a charm. The only problem is that it goes away, even though I believe that I'm saving it in the correct way

  •  Maybe I should specify i bit further, I have no problems saving my VEpro setup locally, it's the unsavaveability of the sibelius playback config on my mac that gives me grief.

  • Hello Gaute!

I recommend using VE Pro connected with the VE Pro Server. If you just trigger it with MIDI connections, you can not save the setup from your master computer.

  •  Hi.

There are several very good reasons why I want to use VEpro as standalone.

I do not need to save the big VE setup from my master computer, that is flawlessly saved locally. What I need to have saved is the playback config, consisting of choice of active devices (midi ports) and assigned manual soundsets. Is this impossible without a two-way communication with the slave? Does this mean that it is impossible to use the vienna soundsets on a slave running VE2? (which I would have used, if it had 3rd part support)? Does it mean that Sibelius is unable to save a config that utilizes old fashioned hardware samplers?

Maybe I should rather ask Sibelius about all this, sorry.

    Best,

    Gaute

  • Hi Gaute!

Of course all hardware MIDI-Ports and Manual Sound Sets settings you made are saved with the Sibelius Playback configuration.
However the VSL sound sets can only be used with virtual instruments. If you want to use them with a hardware MIDI-Port you will have to make an edit to them. Here is how:
Open the sound set with the sound set editor or a text editor and change the entry PatchLoadMechanism (or Type in the Sound Set Editor) from "Fixed" to "MIDI". Save the sound set with a different name.

You might also want to check out the Sibelius/Preferences/Playback window for some Playback Configuration options.

  • Sorry for the late update, I had a deadline that forced me to leave my machines on for a few days.

I have done what you said, but I cannot get rid of the old soundsets. I saved them under new names, but now Sibelius is showing two identical soundsets of the same name, ie VE Woodwinds+brass, Even though I have deleted the one with fixed patchloading.  I have tried to trash the device log, but that destroys my MOL setup, so i had to put it back in. This is really weird, I have no idea where Sibelius is finding those deleted soundsets.. I would probably have saved a lot of time by just typing in my setup every morning, it just feels so wrong. When i open the plaback configuration xml file in text editor, it shows fixed patches all the way. It drives me nuts. Is there a to change the name of the soundset that comes up in the device dialog?

  • Hello Gaute!

Sorry for the confusion. After reading your mail I tried the Fixed/MIDI settings out again with Sibelius 6. Obviously this has changed since Sibelius 5. You can keep the old sound sets and use them with virtual instruments and hardware MIDI ports now. It doesn't matter if PatchLoadMechanism (or Type in the Sound Set Editor) is set to "fixed" or to "MIDI".

The sound sets "VSL Ensemble Special Edition" and "VSL Ensemble Special Edition PLUS" can not be deleted on Mac. They are included in the Sibelius files and invisible for users.

  •  I am as confused as ever.

I am not using any special edition stuff, I have set up a template consisting of wood+brass, orc strings, harps and percussion, and it consistently diappear.

I guess I have to resort to typing the setup in every morning, I have lost too much time already. It' really annoying. Do you have any suggestions?

    Gaute

  • Hi Gaute!

I'm also a bit confused. What exactly do you mean with "template"? Do you mean a "Manuscript Paper", a Playback Configuration or something else? In the first two cases please contact the Sibelius support team. I never heard of a problem where things constantly disappear. If this is VSL related, please describe step by step, what you are doing and what happens (or doesn't happen).

  •  Sorry for the inconsistent terminology.

I meant that I have set up a playback config of wood+brass etc.

My Template, consiting of Vienna-presets (sibelius-optimised), is residing on my Vista slave. It loads and locally without problems.

I still think this problem is VSL related, because it does not happen with other configurations, to my knowledge, anyway.

What I want is to have Sibelius triggering the sounds of that VE template, just like any other sequencer would. It actuallu does just that, flawlessly, but when I quit Sibelius, my playback configuration, consisting of active devices, (midi ports in my case), and manual soundsets are gone when I launch it again.

What is remembered, though, is what soudset is assigned to which port, even if those ports are not remembered as active.

The manual soundsets (individual instrument assignment to each of the 16 channels within a port) are not remembered.

I have tried this with the Sibelus sound engine switched  both on and off (I would like to have it off).

I hope this explain things a little further,

    Gaute

  • Hi Gaute!

Now I understand your problem. I tried the same on my machine with a Playback Configuration consisting of a harware MIDI port, one of our sound sets and some Manual Sound Sets settings. Everything could be saved and reloaded on my next Sibelius session.
This is clearly a Sibelius issue. Sorry, but I can't help you on this matter any more. Please contact Sibelius support.

    Andi
