    Hi, I've just migrated to an MacPro 8-core with lots of RAM, but of course the amount of memory space I can address is limited when running RTAS VIs in ProTools. That's why you developed VE Pro. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that in order to utilize all available RAM, I would want to run VE Pro in standalone mode. So now I've got Pro Tools and VE Pro running on the Mac. Here's my question: how does the audio output from VE Pro get back into Pro Tools? Here's why I'm asking. I actually run Digital Performer (7.1) under DAE as a "front end" for my Pro Tools HD rig (8.0.3). So if your answer to the question above is "via Rewire," that's going to be a problem for me, because DP/DAE doesn't support Rewire. On the other hand, if you've figured out some other RTAS-related way to get audio from VE Pro back into Pro Tools, then there's a chance that will work in DP/DAE as well. I don't suppose anyone has tried that? The other (more expensive) alternative, I think, would be to connect a firewire audio interface, like a MOTU 828 for example, and route VE Pro's output to that interface. Then I could connect the ADAT output from the 828 to an ADAT input on one of my Digi interfaces, and bring that signal into Pro Tools via an Aux track. So I'd be going out of the Mac and back in again, but I think it should work (in theory). Any thoughts on the above would be appreciated.

    I believe this works:

    1. In Pro Tools (PT), create one Instrument Track for each instrument.

    2. In VE Pro (VEP), create the same number of channels.

    3. In PT, set the MIDI Out of each track to the corresponding  channel in VE Pro.

    4. In VEP, set the Audio Out (at the bottom of each channel) to Net1/2, Net 3/4, etc.

    5. In PT, set the Audio In of each track to the corresponding channel in VEP.

    You should now be able to write MIDI data in PT, which will go to separate channels in VEP, and hear the audio back in PT, where you can mix, process, record, etc.

    Thanks for responding, Gary. I'm completely clear re your steps 1-4. The focus of my question is: *how* does step 5 work? Based on your phrasing, it sounds as if VEP has a proprietary way of bussing audio back to an instrument track within PT ("Net1/2, Net3/4"). This is NOT using Rewire, right? This is the fundamental question for me, because it should work in DP/DAE if this is the case.

    That is correct, it is NOT using Rewire.  

    I used to do this with Vienna Ensemble 2, before VEP came out.  I forgot to mention in my original message that this worked when I used VE as a plug-in on an Instrument Track.  Once you insert VEP as a plug-in, I believe all of its audio outputs will show up as available inputs in PT.  I don't know if it will work if VEP is running stand-alone.  I'm away from my rig right now, so I can't check this out.
