  • Optimal Core Settings

    Hello, I have two 8-Core Mac Pros (Snow Leopard) configured in master-slave communicating in DP through VEP. Can someone outline the best settings for multicore processing? Specifically, is it better to have multiple instances of VEP open, or can I just load all my 64-bit VIs in one instance, and 32 bit VIs in another and be done with it. I'm asking because it would be nice not to have to connect to so many instances in my sequencer (guess I'm too lazy to click connect 10 times!). However, if having only one instance of VEP for all my VIs would reduce performance, then of course I would prefer to have many instances. Best.

  • Many sequencers (I'm not sure about DP) are currently limited to 16 midi channels per instrument. This means you have to have a VEPro instance for each 16 instrument block of your template. I think Cubase allows for ports on on the VST3 audio instruments so the people who use Cubase can just have one big instance of 64 bit and one of 32 (if needed).

    Either way, performance is apparently very similar. One could even argue that it's nice to have a template organised into instrument sub-sections (eg strings, winds, brass, etc).

    You should not have to click to connect to the instances if you use a template in your sequencer (happens automatically).

    I'm using an 8 core MacPro and have found the 1 core per instance setting to work well. I have 4 instances in my template.

  • My setup is happier with multiple instances, rather than one huge one. I would venture a guess that multicore distro is better. I connect to a VST3 VE Pro and use multiple ports, but the instruments on the slave have performed better with the cores distributed; such as what I just rendered, 4 instances 4 threads per.

  • There are 16 logical threads available with these 8 cores.

    There is no sequencer running on this machine. The OS isn't doing too much else but VE Pro and the network on this machine. In any case it hasn't been an issue to do this so far.
