  • Any recomendation for a book/site to learn brass arrangement (for Big Band)?

I think it is a difficuilt mission to find a good brass arrange by try and error. So I´d be grateful for some hints, which would be a good book with audio demos oder a good site to study.

What is a good site to get sheets of Big Band arrangements?

  • I'd recommend "Instrumental Jazz Arranging" by Mike Tomaro and John Wilson.

  • Those hints helped a lot. Thank you!

  • My pleasure!

Make sure to select the revised version of the treatise. Richard Strauss knows a thing or two about the subject.

  • Hello Felix,

Berlioz/Strauss is a good base indeed, but actually more for instrumentation of classical music. If you looking for a guide to learn more about Big Band Arrangements I recommend "bill dobbins: jazz arranging and composing" or as well as good "sammy nestico: the complete arranger" (german title: Der professionelle Arrangeur") . AKAIK these are the most common books for those stuff. Hope this helps!

  • Try "Arranging for Large Jazz Ensemble" by Dick Lowell and Ken Pulling, available from Berklee Press.
