  • Sibelius and cymbals, drums and percussion

After a lot of experimenting I got the single line staves to work for cymbals and drums.

    Well, sort of.

    The following problems remain:

I've assigned the velocity x-fade to CC11. But the dynamic marks (p, f, ff etc) don't change the velocity for cymbals and drums, which they do for all other instruments.

I can't make the five-line percussion approach work at all (as explained on page 8 in the Optimizing Sibelius Playback Manual). The notes trigger instruments on other channels, for example the piccolo on channel 1.

I'm using Sibelius 6.2 and the latest versions of Vienna House Style and Special Edition Plus sound sets.

  • Hello Pekay!

The drums and percussion instruments are not prepared for CC11 in the sound set. For percussive sounds Velocity XFade doesn't make much sense anyway. So I recommend turning Velocity XFade off.

I think the description of how to trigger percussion sounds with five-line percussion system is not explained detailed enough. Sorry for that. You will also have to choose a sound ID for the instrument under Playback Defaults/Best Sound. And don't forget to reserve a program/channel for the chosen instrument on the Manual Sound Sets page. For example you could choose a pitched percussion instrument, that you don't have in your score.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thank you for your answer!

Maybe a stupid question, but how do I control the velocity (or the loudness) of percussive sounds from Sibelius?

When the player sees an ff mark he hits the piatti cymbals with strength. How do I tell Vienna to play with strength - or softly?

    Best,

    Pekay

  • Sibelius will translate dynamic marks to velocity. If you write ff, a ff sample will be triggered. There's nothing more to do. [;)]

  • Ok, thanks, I'll try that.
