  • Midi Ports and Cubase

I am running VEP 5 on a 64 bit windows machine along woth Cubase 6.5.  I am working with Herb's Large Orchestra template that he uploaded in an effort to understand better VEP.  The problem I am having is that when i insert a VE in the VST rack in Cubase and create corresponding midi tracks, I only have the option of 16 midi channels from which to choose.  It appears to me that Herb's preset is requiring "midi ports" each with 16 channels available in order to have access to 40 or so channels of instruments (one or more ports per section, i.e. WW, Brass, Perc, Strings, etc).  I have usually set up my orchestral template with 4 instances of VEP, one for each section.  Then I insert 4 instances in my VST rack, thereby havoing access to 16x4 discreet channels of midi in which to trigger the vienn sample data.  So, trying to work ity Herb's way, here's my question.

Can someone direct me as to how to  "build" virtual midi ports in Cubase so I can work with Herb's template? It appears that many of the staff at Vienna are intimately familiar with Cubase, so I was hoping someone here could advise.  If not, I will turn to the Cubase forum.

    Best,

    Jay

  •  If you use the VST3 version of VE Pro (denoted by ///) you can use multiple ports per instance. the number of ports you have access to is set in the VEP Preferences.

  • Thanks fo course for your reply.  I did just discover that.  But, it left me wioth a couple of questions.  Could I bother you for a brief explanation?

So, it seems that the VEPx64 does not allow me to create more than one midi port when inseeted into Cubase.  Is this the expected behavior?  Is the plugin labelled "Vienna Ensemble Pro" 64 bit?  Finally, if it is not 64 bit, does it matter?

  • "Vienna Ensemble Pro x64" is the VST2 version of the plugin. The one you need to use (VST3) is labeled "Vienna Ensemble Pro" and has a "III" icon next to it in the menu. It is of course also 64-bit.

  • Thank you so much.  I did not realize that the one labelled "Vienna Ensemble Pro" was not only vst3, but also 64bit.

  • Me either. I could swear I'd been advised by some pretty knowledgeable users -here- that the /// version was somehow less flexible than the x64. THANKS!

  • Well, the /// version does not support Program Changes, otherwise it should be the better choice. Thank Steinberg for removing support for those annoying program change messages ;)

I still want to know how Program Lists differ from Program Changes, but until the developers (including VSL) make a VST3 version of their sample players, I guess I'll just have to imagine how wonderful it could be. [;)]
