  • Is this a good router for VEP?

    Hello,

I want to purchase a router so that my DAW setup can be on it's own network - away from the other computers/printers/etc.  I know a switch is best, but a switch doesn't separate Networks.. only expands.

I found this Router - D-Link DIR-655 for pretty cheap.  It has Giga ports and of course, i'll disable the wifi.

I keep reading about avoiding "Green" routers for VEP.  Can the developers (who hopefully read this) let me know if this is okay to get for VEP to work on?

    Here's a link on amazon http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LIFB7S/ref=asc_df_B000LIFB7S2178167?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=cnet-pc-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B000LIFB7S

Thank you for any help or suggestions!

    J

  • You want to get a switch.  If you setup fixed IPs you don't need a router to create a separate network, just separate NICs in the connected systems.

    Thanks Bill!

I have Static IP's..  How do I separate NICs?

  • You buy and install separate network cards...

  • I use UNmanaged gigabit switches for that purpose.  I especially like (< $100):

Your VSL slave can have 2 network adapters, for example one in your "normal" network (with access to internet) with an address like 192.168.1.100 and the other dedicated to the VSL master with both computers in the 192.168.2.xxx address range for example.  The switch will manage traffic.
