  • Imperial and CPU load in Logic

I love Imperial. But I keep getting major overload in the CPU indicator in the transport bar of Logic. Polyphony just 80, no 2sus activated. Standard settings really. Activity monitor isn't showing a problem, but Logic crackles like crazy.

Any ideas? It's streaming off an SSD by the way.

  • I've had logic switch on me from 64 bit to 32 unexpectedly, which causes the same symptoms. And also check the buffer size. Mine is set to 1024 currently.

  • Sorry, but Logic cannot change from 64 to 32 bit all on its own. It is not smart enough to do that. Only a user, perhaps inadverdantly, can.

  •  Rotten, toten, toottin, pollutin bugs ..

  • My buffer was at 128, so I'm trying it at 256. Seems a bit better.

  • Jay

It switched on me just yesterday. When it leaves 64 bit, it doesn't show up again for a while. It boots up on 32 until I boot up the computer a few times. The tempo will crash it most of the time. The 64 bit default completely disappears for a while. Then it returns on its own...

BTW - Love your music. And will purchase your book. You're the real deal..

  • Thnaks for the kind words!  Forgive me if you already know all this but here is what I think is going on:

    1. If you find Logic Pro in the Applications folder, click on the icon and press the Command key and I for Get Info you see a checkbox that says open in 32 bit. If it is unchecked, you are opening Logic in 64 bit and nothing will change that until you quit Logic and check that box.

    2. If when you have opened a project in Logic 64 bit you instantiate a 32 bit plugin, another helper app called the 32 bit Audio Unit Bridge opens so that you can use it.

THAT is probably what is appearing and disappearing, not Logic itself. It is quite finnicky and does not like certain plug-ins.

  • Yes, that is exactly what I'm seeing, as you mention clearly... Logic seems to time out after a long session.( but rarely it does it ). It has only done this 3 times actually. So its not a problem, but it seems to do it after draining a long session and as you mentioned, somehow the user acivates it. On the last session, I was just adjusting volocity of notes with the mouse, and it started crackin and poppin as jim described it. Another time a while back, the Imperial Piano caused it, as jim eluded also. The last time it happened, I could not get it to boot up in 64 bit for a few. Then it decided to correct itself. So one needs to keep an eye on the boot up stage and makes sure its in 64 bit, otherwise bypass audio unit scanning and check and uncheck  the 32 bit box to try to get it to boot up in 64 bit correctly... This has been my experience with this issue. And clearly its a memmory issue.. Other recent piano venders recomend atleast 1063 buffer size. I think thats the no., Somewhere in that range anyhow... Also after a long session, if you have a file full of information in the working stage and you try to add a node in the tempo track, it will crash, but save the file in crashed mode, wich is atleast favorable anyhow.. Thanks for responding .. Its good to hear and know the normal ...
