  • External Drives for Mac Mini

I have 2 slave i7 mac minis with 16 gig of ram each, and running VE Pro 5. Im running all of my vsl horns off of one and all of my vsl percussion off the other. Would I have petter performance by using firewire 800 drives for my Samples instead of using the internal system drive? I plan on getting 2 fast thiunderbolt drives in the future, but I have 2 fire wire 800 drives I could use right now. I also run Symphobia/True-strike  on those machines as well.

  • I am looking at getting a mac mini to use as a slave but I know that the internal HD they come with is only 5400 rpm and it is advisable to have a minimum of 7200 rpm. The options are modifying the internal or getting an external and I think thunderbolt sound like the best solution as. I think firewire 800 is Ok as long as the rpm of the drive is fast enough. I would like to ask you how well your existing setup performs with the internal drives in the minis. Are you getting problems? And also what host do you have? Regards M

  • Well, so far they are performing pretty well. I was intending on getting external drives for minis all along, but it seems to work just fine with VI stuff. I haven't been able to push the systems yet so... I will say one thing, the cpu is hanging pretty well with lots of instruments and altiverb running on my mac minis. I am using Logic as a host on a Pac Pro 1,1 with 32 gig of ram. What is the best thunderbolt connectable drive solution for a mac mini is what I want to know.
