  • Just purchased Vienna Imperial - future upgrade and discount?

I feel like I'm buying an older model car with the Vienna Imperial, despite that,I realize it's still the best VST piano out there. My main concern is that given the price of this piano, would there be an upgrade price or discount if VSI came out with a new piano? In other words, do existing Vienna Imperial owners get any kind of discount when/if a new piano comes out?

  • First, welcome to the forums.

If you don't mind a bit of a humorous reply, there is a major difference between a classic car and a rusted out beater.  VSL is the former, not the latter. <smile>

More seriously, VSL, as a company, is a bit different from some of the other ones out there.  What they release is very well done, as you yourself said, and therefore tends to only be replaced very rarely, as the Vienna Piano replaced the previous Bosendorfer (still available).  If by chance you've also listened to the demos of that older piano, it is clear that the Vienna Piano is in a very different league.  The VSL woodwind libraries are another example of a highly regarded "older" product.  Even the "lowly" SE woodwinds are still recommended as some of the best woodwinds out there in other forums (the v.i. control forum).

When new products are released, in the past VSL has offered generous upgrade paths to existing users.  Even with the SE sample libraries, ugrade discounts are given when the SE library owner purchases a full library of related content.

In recent years, VSL has been developing first Dimension Brass, and currently Dimension Strings.  Some Recorders were released as well.  In terms of software, focus has been on MIR Pro, and related products.  My best guess is that a new piano is not forthcoming in the near future (as I don't work for VSL, that is strictly a guess).  Again, unlike many other companies, VSL tends not to announce things well in advance.  They tend to announce products only when they are nearly finished, or indeed, after they have been finished.

    Again, welcome to the forums.

Bearing in mind how intensively VSL sampled the Vienna Imperial www.vsl.co.at/en/211/442/478/1701/1305.htm, and given that they already have a second (older) piano in their product range and are now committed to finishing Dimension Strings (700,000 samples to program), I think it's unlikely they will sample a third piano. Just my opinion!

  • Well I'm kinda getting a bit pissed. I purchased this from Sweetwater early yesterday morning, because of their advertised "we have a great relationship with Vienna, and we can get your code within a few hours" So it's been over 24 hours and still no code. Surely, someone from Sweetwater can simply call to Germany and say hey, we need a code. The Sweetwater rep wasn't even sure if the process was automated.. well would be nice to find out then before advertising. I would have ordered elsewhere had I known this. Sorry for being a bit annoyed, but this download is gonna take a while here in the USA and would like to get started as soon as possible.

  • From our side everything is 100% automated. Sweetwater can generate an deliver product serials instantly. They don't have to contact us to do this.

So if they don't have any issues with your payment you should get your licenses ASAP.

A little background information: our IT sales team has spent more than one year of developement for a webbased Dealer Interface Software, so that any authorisded VSL dealer is able to deliver our products serials as fast as possible to their customers.

    best

    [:|] ... Germany?

  • So I called Sweetwater and they advised that they needed my user ID from this website. So I gave them my forum name? Seems quite odd they really had little clue on what they needed to do. No one there said they needed my forum ID... why they would need that...? Seems so unsecure, but I guess they send the key via my email, hopefully. Did I make a booboo or something... Maybe you guys are in Austria, not Germany... ouch...

  • Keys generally are sent by email.  You might want to check you spam folder, as sometimes those emails get routed to the wrong folder by one's ISP.

In the past I've bought things both through Sweetwater and directly through the distributor Ilio.  With Ilio, if one is upgrading (not your case) they do need your VSL registration/forum email in order to verify what products you currently have registered, and that you are indeed entitled to the upgrade price (ye olde theft/fraud issues).  IIRC, when purchasing special pricing deals Sweetwater needed the information in order to validate special pricing - some sort of internal policy, I am guessing.  Why, they would need it in this case, is less clear.  If you don't receive your serial number, it might be a good idea to get back in touch with Sweetwater to get things straightened out.  You will find that VSL (in Vienna, Austria <smile>) has very good customer service.

As for buying from Sweetwater or directly through the United States distributor Ilio (ilio), Sweetwater offers a very slight additional discount on standard libraries, but in terms of streamlined purchasing, I would personally favor Ilio FWIW.  Another option, if you have a DAW builder, and that builder is an authorized VSL distributor, then buying through the builder may have a slight advantage.

  • Well finally got the activation code, and in the email they said they aready registered the serial number. I go into my USER AREA and see that Vienna Imperial is registered. SO then I downloaded the Vienna Imperial Download Manager... and it's doing nothing. No download happening, nothing showing up in the window. Now what? Am I missing something?

  • I do encounter the same behaviour everytime I purchase a download-instrument: the DL-manager does not download anything, it stays at 0% and 0 connected servers.

You should contact VSL support directly, in my case they put up an individual ftp-download every time immediately.

  • For the record, I've had great experiences with Sweetwater. It was a bit odd to me too that they needed my username, but the amount of payment options they have made it more than worth the extra day it took. Plus the price is nice too.
