  • Questions about migrating to solid state disk

    Hi all,

I'm in a good position in-between projects now, and I was hoping to switch to solid state disk for VSL.  I have a few questions about how I might be able to migrate transparently so that old projects hopefully still load correctly?

    (1) Will it work if I just blatantly copy the VSL data folders to my SSD, and then use the VSL directory manager to point to the new location?

    (2) Will I need to do anything in my sequencer, or will it "Just Work" when I try to load an existing project?

    (3) Will the basic (non-pro) versions of Vienna Ensemble and Vienna Instruments recognize a solid state disk and take advantage of the performance gains, or will I need to buy the pro versions?

    (4) Will Vienna Ensemble and Vienna Instruments automatically recognize the SSD, or is there an option we need to toggle?

    (5) If in the future I run out of disk space on the SSD, will I be able to use some software loaded on a conventional disk, and some on the solid state disk, but still get the reduced RAM usage and speed benefits of the SSD for the sounds that are stored there?

    Thanks in advance!

  • 1) yes

    2) no need to do anything in your sequencer, as it's all handled within VSL's software

    3) hmmm... that one I'd have to look up. But... you know... go Pro, it's great.

    4) You can drop the Preload Buffer size in the Directory Manager much lower on the SSD to take most advantage.

5), Yeah, you can absolutely mix types of drives.

You'll love the difference. Practically no loading time when opening projects. It's great.

  • Wonderful - thanks!

There's a Preload Buffer size in the Directory Manager? I just fired mine up and didn't see any setting. Am I using an old version, or are you thinking of the Latency setting in VE etc...?

    Thanks,

    Michael

    Hi Michael,

The Preload Buffer Size can only be adjusted if you have VI PRO.

You can always check with a free demo license of VI PRO, available here (click "try").

VI PRO Software is available in your VI PRO User Area then.

    Best,

    Paul
