  • Dimension Brass for Brass Quintet?

I am preparing to compose a brass quintet piece, and I would like to know whether it is preferable to use Vienna Dimension Brass for the task. Did anyone have tried this set-up?

At the moment, I have Special Edition Vol. 1 and 2, and Wallander WIVI Band which both include solo brass instruments for a brass quintet. However, as my piece will be a contemporary classical music piece that requires extended techniques and I would like to have a mock-up that sounds as real as possible, SE Vol. 1/2 and WIVI Band both seem a little bit inadequate for the job.

The reason I am interested in the Dimension Brass is that I need to have two trumpets and avoid any phasing issue.

What would be the most cost effective and satisfactory option? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Dimension Brass is not really designed for this kind of soloistic use.  It is for full orchestral ensemble use that demands instruments playing either in chords or unison at any given moment.  A little of the tuba is audible with the trombone, a little of the other trumpets or horns can be heard on each individual player.  This can be noticeable in solo use.

The VSL solo brass instruments are what should normally be used in a quintet.  With the two trumpets, you can either set up two different trumpets by using slightly different articulations (such as progressive vibrato sustain and non-vibrato sustain, etc.) on the two different players, or use the transposition technique of up one tone with pitch shift down one tone  - a solution to phasing that works perfectly.  Also, the Solo Brass have the great advantage of far more articulations than Dimension (at least right now) which would likely be needed in specific brass scoring.

  • In addition to the trumpet C (single instrument or instrument collection brass I) vou can use trumpet Bb (single instrument). So you have two seperate trumpets.
