  • VE Pro5 and Windows 7...Home vs Professional

    Hello,

I was wondering which version of Windows 7 is needed for a VE Pro5 and computer/slave setup? Or are both versions of Windows 7 (Home and Professional) accomodating?

I recall reading one difference between Windows 7 Home and WIndows 7 Professional, is the remote desktop feature only available in the latter. Is this feature needed (or recommeneded) for the comupter/slave setup?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

I have Win 7 Pro on my DAW machine and Win 7 Home on the slave. You're right that Home doesn't ordinarily allow remote desktop to work, and you'll find it a lot easier if you can use this. Luckily there is a patch/hack here:

I can't remember now how I set it up but it wasn't a major problem and now I run the brass section of my orchestra off my laptop.

  • I had the setup similar to the one you are interested in, 2 Windows Home machines. Used VNC viewer without any problems (look up "RealVNC" in Google). It's free. I think there are also other pieces of software with reputation that you can use.

  • Thanks vyv and crusoe! I'll take a look at the workarounds and software you two recommended. This stuff is beyond my realm of knowledge. Appreciate the info!

  • Windows 7 Home only allows access to 16GB of RAM.

Quite so. If you're just deciding which version to get, get Pro. But once you've got Home, it's bizarrely expensive to upgrade (last time I looked).

  • Ahh good points Bill and vyv. I had not even considered nor was aware about the ram limitations of Windows 7 home edition. Thanks!
