  • Soprano sax getting "stuck" in certain articulations with Sibelius

I'm writing for saxophone sextet, one of each member of the family, but with two sopranos in my playback configuration, one standing in for sopranino. None of the other four instruments have this problem, but the soprano gets stuck playing particular articulations once it encounters them. The first time it happened it got stuck playing downward bend for each note, regardless of the notation, after I had written one in. After some fruitless investigating I tried restarting Sibelius and Vienna, and it seemed to be okay. I didn't want the bend there anyway, so I removed it and wrote in a few staccato notes. Now they (both sopranos) play everything staccato. After a restart they will play everything normally until they reach the staccato, and from there on it's all staccato. Again, just the sopranos, everyone else is fine. I'm using all the proper sax presets for Sibelius in Vienna Ensemble; and the playback configuration in Sibelius is as it always is, VE Woodwinds + Brass soundset, manual soundset screen properly configured with correct channels, channels and output correctly assigned in the mixer, and VSL House Style in effect. I don't know what else to check. Thanks, Clare

  • Hello Clare!

It can have different reasons, why articulations don't change as supposed. If you have tried to make manual output or channel settings in the Sibelius mixer, this can mess up your playback. In this case reset all outputs to (Auto).

The Sopranino Sax is not included in the Saxophones library and the Sibelius Sound ID for it is not included in the "VE Woodwinds + Brass" sound set. So if you have this instrument in your score, Sibelius will try to substitute it somehow and this can mess up your playack. Editing the Sound ID of the instrument might help. This can be done as follows:
    - Sibelius menu File/Preferences/Playback/Display: Sound IDs
    - Select a bar of the Sopranino Sax in your score
    - Home/Instruments/Edit Instrument/Yes/Playback Defaults/Best sound/Choose: Wind/Saxophones/Soprano/Normal

Further help can be found in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual, Troubleshooting section.

  • Yup. I had made manual output and channel settings. All is well now. Thank you, Clare
