  • First composition placed on VSL forum

    HI,

I never dare to put something on the internet. Lot of professionals here and I am just an amateur. But I like to know what you think of this piece. Last week I saw a youtube video in which Andrew Gerlicher named the octatonic scale. I was inspired by that. So I thought I make a piece of music in which I apply the scale.

I appreciate it if you let me know what you think. Any tips etc.

  • ...this is very, very impressive...a finely orchestrated and formally very taut and well-developed piece...an amateur you say? [<:o)] (...I must say I am very happy to see such a piece done by an alumna of my orchestration course... ;-)

  • Hi Goran,

This compliment makes me a bit shy. Thank you so much. I thought -'cause there where no reactions- nobody liked it.

    Hi Frieda,

never be discouraged by a lack of reaction in a forum - that doesn't mean anything 😉

Again - excellent work. And to join greystorm, some people would probably be interested in some technical production detail (which libraries, what did you use for spatial disposition, any additional audio processing?...)

  • Hi Goran,

I used VSL libraries and Sonic Implants (old gigastudio files) for some strings parts and Fr. Hrns. I completely wrote it in notation software Notion. Use Vienna Suite Convolution reverb and Vienna Suite limiter. I have Mir Pro24 but in combination with Notion I have some problems. For the spatial position therefor I made use of Virtual Sound stage. The Sonic Implants library the instruments are already in place

I love to write in Notion but I think with Logic you can have a far more realistic performance with more feeling in it. I always am in conflict what to choose. How do you compose? Do you start in notation software or in some other DAW?

    Hi Frieda,

thanks for the info, nice to see you making good use of Vienna Suite ;-)

What you are saying on Notion/Logic is true - a sequencer with good MIDI editing possibilties is always superior to a notation software application when it comes to shaping the finer (and sometimes not even finer) nuances of a sample-based orchestra music performance.

I myself compose (orchestral/chamber/piano music) with paper, pencil and piano only (no sample libraries involved). Orchestrating using sample libraries is also completely foreign to me (though I have nothing againts it for any reasons of principle - there are many people who are used to work (and work well) this way) - I orchestrate on paper only. After I have a detailed score sketch, I write it into Sibelius and then convert the score into MIDI. From that point on, the sample libraries come in - the production process begins. Only after I have advanced far into making a decent sounding performance of a piece will I start using the result for a revison of this or that orchestration solution or detail.

  • Hello Frieda;

I greatly enjoyed your compositions-inspiring me to seriously start some work. Keep it up!

  • That's very nice of you to say. Thank you.

    Kind regards,

    Frieda
