  • routing problem: multiple separate instruments in Logic Pro X

    Dear fellow users,

after days of extensive reading (VSL-manuals and various fora), watching (tutorials) and experimenting I still cannot get the hang of setting up a proper basic workflow in both Ensemble and Logic Pro X for a simultaneous combination of multiple separate midi-tracks/signals coming out of Ensemble. Even trying with aux's did not seem to work.

Either I get f.i. a violin on all channels or a trombone on none...

Recording one single orchestral track (polyphonic) works like a charm, but there it stops. 😳

Am I thinking too much the old school way or do I really miss something simple? I'm working on a Mac with Yosemite, by the way.

Pls. help me out, as the awe for the majestic VSL sound(s) threatens to be overwhelmed by growing frustration on the (for me indeed) steep learning curve...

    Thanks in advance,

    Ton

P.S. Although I'm not new to the digital world of music - a couple of years ago I recorded, mixed and mastered an album in/with ProTools - I cannot help thinking back to the days of Pro24 + a MT32...😝.

    Hi Tophat,

The basic VI Tutorials also cover a bit of routing in Vienna Ensemble.
The Special Edition Tutorials show the setup in detail, and you can also find those projects in "MyVSL", under "Tutorials".

The most common misunderstanding in the beginning is that the MIDI Channels on top of each channel are not set correctly.

    Does that help?

  • Thanks for answering, Paul.

Although the quoted links generate an error-message (probably due to the re-design of the new great website) I will look in the tutorials again. One overlooked thing I found al'dy, is this helpfull quote of Tobias with regard to instances:

"I have found some AUs acting weird when using the first channel. They sometimes react on all channels... This may actually be a Logic issue... That‘s why I recommend only using channels 2 to 16."

This could be exactly what I seem to be experiencing (see my initial post).

    So, en bataille it is!

    All the best,

    Ton

  • Hi Ton,

Sorry about the second link, working now! There shouldn´t be any trouble with MIDI Channel 1 and Logic, in any case!

  • Thanks, Paul.

I still must be assigning something the wrong way, though.

I'm getting closer - finally having different sounds on different channels - but one thing remains: when I play a midi region on a single channel, still all channels respond visually on the green volume control led.

    Channels are midi-assigned correctly, though...

    All the best,

    Ton

  • Hi Ton,

Maybe you want to send such a project to support@vsl.co.at, so we can take a look!
The more information you add, the better.

  • A quick follow-up that could help others sometimes:

    - after deciding to perform a hard reset of my keyboard controller, as to clear possible unwanted CC messages, everything started to work fine for me.

The only thing I have to apply additionally, is changing a CC as to enable each instrumenttrack to react according to its own level instead of 16 tracks acting simultaneously (which still seems to be a Logic issue).

    All the best,

    Ton

  • From what I have found, there's no way around this unless you use one instrument per VEPro instance; you can still control the volumes of each track but the green meter will always respnd to the first instrument channel.

There definitely is a way around this. Meanwhile I came across following suggestion:

As I'm working with Logic Pro X this did the trick for me. 😊
