  • Hi Guy,

It sounds really great! I like almost all your compositions. I think you are a great composer.

Can you tell me about the con sordino strings at the beginning of the compostion. Did you use EQ, they sound nice, silky and warm. If so can you tell me in what frequency you applied EQ. Did you use Appassionata strings or Orchestra strings?

I was wondering how you compose. Do you first start with notating the music or do you start directly into the sequencer. Can you tell me something about your composing technique? I am just curious.

    Kind regards,

    Frieda

  • Thank you very much Frieda!

About the strings, They are not consordino, however, I use the filter (Exp-Filter) to play around with the timbre a bit, sometimes you don't want it too bright.  I use a bit of EQ where I increase a bit around the 10k. A bit of exciter and VSL combressor for string ensemble. Although, I think the smoothness comes mainly from the balance between parts.

Also, since each string library has its individual qualities, it's always nice to be able to seasoning a line with another string library. When I want some extra expression I bring in some espressivo solo strings, making sure the balance works. So dimension strings + (solo espressivo strings on specific notes or passages) works out good. I don't remember in this piece, but it happens I may use orchestral strings on the top line if the overall sound is too thin. And Appassionata is reserved for a very lush passage, and I think I should use them a bit more. In this piece I don't think I used them. Hope this fills you in a bit on your string question.

  • Hi Guy

I've listened to your track a number of times in a row and i really like it: beside being a beautiful piece of music and a perfectly balanced score it has a great MIDI rendering and a very good mix. It would be nice to learn some details on the instrument positioning and the mixing technique in general.

    Best regards

  • Hi Guy,

Thank you for your tips. I am going to play with the exp filter in the performance tab.

    Kind regrads,

    Frieda

  • Guy, among the countless great pieces you wrote, arranged and produced, this is without doubt one of the most impressive ones.

Congratulations, and thanks for some marvellous musical moments.

  • That sounds great, Guy.  Very, dramatic and varied, and made me want to see a film to accompany the music.  The way things should be.

  • Hmm, maybe I should have a another listen, but certainly appreciate these comments for sure!

  • Hi Guy,

What a fine piece with a lot of drama and refined techniques. Another marvel on your already huge list of demos and musical wonders.

Many thanks for letting us have some insight in your way of dealing with strings and string ensembles. It's always interesting to be able to learn from very experienced VSL users. This is a lifetime learning process, with gratitude to the developers!

    Thanks for sharing,

    Max
