  • Need Recommendations on Slave Computer

Hi All, first time poster here.

I don't have VEP yet, about to buy one. So I need recommendations on the new slave PC that I will built.

Currently I'm using a single i7 32bit Win7 and can't (and WILL NOT) get 64bit due to legacy hardware that I use in this machine. Therefore, I'm stuck with 32bit limitations that are all memory related. I'm hoping to solve that by getting VEP.

I use tons of guitar emulators (Guitar Rig, Amplitube etc.), Toontrack Superior Drummer and EZ Drummer, and old Gigastudio version of Vienna Symphonic Orchestra. I'm planning to switch to Epic Orchestra and maybe other VEP based orchestra bundles. So all that (guitar VSTs, Toontrack, Vienna orchestra packages) will need to be used on the slave machine, fully or partially.

    1. As I understand it, I will need lots of memory on the slave PC (like 32gb?) But what about CPU? Do I need i7 or it can be an i5???  In my current machine CPU usage never rises above 20% but memory maxes out very quickly (which is obvious). So, Do I need a i7 for tasks mentioned above or it can be i5?   i3?

    2. What about network? Do I really need dedicated network cards? Do switches and routers add latency? Right now I'm using an old Linksys WRT54G router with 4 LAN plugs that are all being used. Can I just plug the new slave PC to that router via a switch?

    Thanks!

  • Anyone, please!??

    Hi stason99,

I´m afraid your assumption that VE PRO will solve the memory related limitations for 32 bit plug-ins is not correct.

There is no internat bit-bridge in VE PRO, but of course you can experiment with 3rd party bit bridges like jbridge.

In general: The more cores you have, the better. i7 or i5 or i3: It depends on your budget and wishes.
=> Check out the professional computers of established audio system builders.

Network: You can also use the integrated network ports, as long as it is a GigaBit connection. Switches and Routers do not add latency. Personally, I´d probably get a new router with more LAN plugs right away before experimenting with Switches (depends on your network experience and patience).

  • Paul, thanks for your reply. But if I run these VST plugins off a different PC, 64bit or 32bit, linked via VEP, won't it solve the problem? Right now all my plugins are being ran from the DAW which can only allocate 4gb of RAM in theory, but actually much less.

  • Hello stason99,

The 32 bit VE PRO Server can load 32 bit plug-ins (with all the limitations that come with 32 bit).

The 64 bit VE PRO Server can load 64 bit plug-ins.

As I said, it might be worth checking out 3rd party bit bridges, but we can´t guarantee that this will work (especially not for each and every plug-in and older version).

The way you described your setup, you really really want to keep the 32 bit plug-ins, so I´d give it a try.

    Best,
    Paul

  • It's not the 32bit plugins I'm locked to but legacy audio hardware which only works in 32bit Windows. Therefore I'm stuck with Win7 32bit which limits me on memory for vst and sample players. I guess I'll give it a try. Just need to look for a discount on VEP.

    Hi stason99,

You can also check with a free demo license.

    Please register your ViennaKey here.

Alternatively, you can also use a Steinberg or Arturia Key, if you have one or can get one faster (they are usually available in music stores, and it´s the same copy protection system, "eLicenser").

Please let me know when this is done (support@vsl.co.at), I will send a demo license right away.

These demo licenses work for 30 days/30 starts. Once the 30 starts are used up, you can recharge them as often as you like by clicking "Maintenance" in the eLicenser Control Center (within 30 days).

    Best,
    Paul

  • Paul, sounds good. Many thanks. How much is a recharge? Or is it free?

  • Hi,

Recharging the demo starts is free. We simply had to put a limit there.

  • Do you mean there's a limit on how many times it can be rechaged and for how long?

  • Hi stason,

Yes, that´s what I meant by:

"These demo licenses work for 30 days/30 starts. Once the 30 starts are used up, you can recharge them as often as you like by clicking "Maintenance" in the eLicenser Control Center (within 30 days)."

Demo licenses usually are not permanent licenses...

  • I wanted to get Steinberg Key but my local store has only Vienna Key. I want to be able to use it for future purchases of Steinberg product as well. Do you know if Veinna key works for Steinberg software?

I don't want to buy online becase I can't wait - need to test VE PRO during this holiday (in US).

  • Hi,

It´s the same key, made by eLicenser and works for Steinberg products as well.
