Hello

I use Sibelius with VSL Special Edition Complete and MIR Pro 24 / Roompack 1. I tried different setups in MIR but somehow I feel overchallenged with getting good sound results. I'm an absolute beginner to this field, and I wished that someone could give me basic rules advice, because I couldn't figure it out by myself using the manual.

Hi Hans-Peter,

I'm not sure from reading your message whether you have technical issues or rather problems to understand the workflow of MIR Pro. :-) In case of the latter, the following introduction might be helpful. This is all you need to know to make music within Vienna MIR Pro. We assume that you are familiar with the basics of MIDI and computer handling, though.

10 Easy steps to work with Vienna MIR Pro

  1. Make sure that MIR Pro and at least one of its Venues are installed properly; make sure that all dongles are in place and that drivers are up-to-date.
  2. Open your Host (DAW, Vienna Ensemble/Pro, scoring software ...) and add Vienna MIR Pro to at least one of your source tracks (Vienna Instruments, third-party instrument, audio tracks ...)
  3. Open MIR Pro's Main Window. Select Venue, and the Microphone Position within the Venue and load it. - Alternatively, open a previously saved MIR Project (for example one of the Venue Presets which are available from your "MyVSL"-download area on this site).
  4. Choose an Output Format (or create your own), unless you have loaded an existing Project and want to use its Output Format.
  5. Select the proper Instrument Profile for this instance's Icon and apply a meaningful name (MIR Pro can do this by itself when using Vienna Instruments, BTW).
  6. Drag the instrument’s Icon to the desired position on the stage of the selected Venue and adjust its direction.
  7. Press Play on your DAW/ Sequencer, or play some notes on your MIDI keyboard.
  8. Repeat steps 5–7 to set up your Orchestra.
  9. Adjust any parameters of the Icon in real time or use the sliders in Instrument Channel View.
  10. Use the Output Channel View to adjust the output volume and other global parameters.
  11. Hear your virtual orchestra play in full depth and glory. :-) And don't forget to save your Project.

Most of these steps will be adjusted (semi-)automatically when you use MIR Pro in its so-called MIRx-Mode

Ich hoffe, es ist okay, wenn ich es auf Deutsch versuche. Danke für die schnelle Antwort.

Mit den technischen Grundlagen habe ich weniger ein Problem, aber ich wollte gerne wissen, was ich beachten muss, um einen guten Klang zu bekommen? (Ich weiß, dass das vermutlich eine schlecht gestellte Frage ist, u. A. da sie höchst unpräzise und subjektiv ist) Auf Grund der Vielzahl an verschiedenen Möglichkeiten in MIR Pro 24 fühle ich mich beim Herumprobieren im Programm etwas überfordert ein für mich zufriedenstellendes klangliches Ergebnis zu erreichen. Daher meinte ich in meinem ersten Post dass es für mich sehr hilfreich wäre, wenn es so etwas wie Grundregeln (z.B. Instrumentenposition, Mikrophonauswahl etc.) gäbe. Ich muss zugeben, ich habe nach einiger Zeit schon gewisse Fortschritte bezüglich "Verständnis" von MIR gemacht, aber ideal wäre für mich, wenn das Ganze weniger zeitaufwändig wäre, daher meine Posts.

Dear Hans-Peter,

I understand that it would be easier for everybody to write in his/her first language, but we decided to use English as the "lingua franca" of our time in this public forum. This way most visitors should be able to benefit from our conversation, not just you and me. :-)

(Summary: Hans-Peter was asking about some technical guidelines for fast and easy results when working with MIR Pro.)

The manual covers some of your questions in a dedicated chapter. You'll find "Collected hints for your daily work with Vienna MIR Pro / MIR Pro 24", starting on page 60. They cover aspects like "Getting 'that' sound", "Keeping Track of What Is Where", and so on.

Apart from that: MIR tries to stick to the workflows and methods of audio engineers as closely as possible. We're  chosing a Venue, we are positioning an instrument on its stage and setting up the main microphones. No snake oil, no secret sauces. ;-)

Dear Dietz,

I want to apologize for my German post, I wasn't aware of your policy. And thank you for your further quick reply. Since I see no other way than to spend the necessary time with MIR, I choose to go that direction. One last question: I'm just guessing, but I think it's not possible to use the MIR Pro Venue Presets with the free version of Vienna Ensemble?

Hi Hans-Peter,

MIR Pro will run happily in the free version of Vienna Ensemble, too, but I have to admit that I would have to test the possibility to load VI Frames derived from VE Pro. 

... and no need to apologize, it's tempting to write in our common language, I know.
