I'm looking at these servers for VEP.  Anyone here using them?  Any tips?  Do you use a regular OS or Server OS?  Thanks!

Well alrighty then!  Shame to hear.  It looks like you cna get the same specs as the 12 core cheese grader mac but with up to 300+gigs of ram for only a few hundred bucks.  Seems like it would be a good fit, but I don't know servers.

I think the main question is about operating system. Nowaday servers are optimized for virtualization and, if you don't use an hypervisor, you will need a server OS, mainly because it is not guaranteed that Win10 will support all the peripherals.

If you do have a virtual infrastructure, go for it; you can easily get a barely used server with two hexacore Xeons and 192 GB RAM for less than 1500 euros. If not, you can try the VMWare ESXi free edition, now (if I remember correctly) there is only a limitation in 2 physical CPU (not cores).

I use IBM at work, but HW brand is not so important nowaday unless you need assistance.

If you are thinking about servers as slaves, I'd rather go for 2 slaves with less ram due to processor speed (so, two twin systems with 2x X5690 Six Core 3.46 GHz and 128GB RAM would be about 2100 euros...).

Yes, and you need a rack, and a cooling, and they take a LIFE to make a cold start...

Hi Everyone,

I have that server in my studio, it's only a month now.

Unfortunately I'm regretting my purchasing of Vienna and of course the server. That's why:

- Server CPU @15% and VEP CPU totally spiked over 95%
- RAM Used: 20 Gb but it is sufficient since I can't put any other file on Vienna or it will explode. Clicks and distortions even when I play only ONE track.

Please help me guys. I'm going back to only one computer, VEP seems to be a perfect useless tool and a bad purchasing. My old Mac Pro by itself can load the same libraries in Cubase without any problem.

My computers:

MASTER: Mac Pro 5.1 8 cores, 64Gb RAM

SLAVE: Dell Poweredge R710 Xeon X5670 @ 2.93 GHz, 128 Gb RAM, storage 8 terabyte with all SSD, no raid

Direct cable connection, Cat6, cable length 15Mt.

Please help me!

Old thread, but I'm using this exact setup. I have W10 installed on the server, and it works great. I'm crushing it with plugins and it handles great. Using VEP7. Host is PC with W10 also.
