  • VEP/DP Memory Leak Update

This is an update on a memory leak issue I reported on June 20th with Vienna Ensemble Pro & Digital Performer.

I'm using Vienna Ensemble Pro 6 (VEP6), Vienna Instruments Pro (VIP) and Vienna Mir Pro (VMP).  My Master computer is an iMac with 32 GB of ram.  The two slaves are an iMac and a Mac Pro.  All of the above have VEP6 servers.  My DAW is MOTU's Digital Performer.  I have been using this configuration for over a year with considearble size of instruments used with no problem.  I have the latest updates of software installed on all of the above.

Recently, I noticed that if I leave the system open for a few hours, I get a low memory warning message from my Master OS.  The "beach ball" appears on DP and I need to force quit to exit DP.  The project I was working on had very few open instruments and a few audio channels.  Plus, I was not even working with DP at the time.

I called MOTU technical support and discussed the problem.  I was advised to check memory usage via the Activity Monitor with VEP6 and without VEP6.  I've completed a number of tests.  (The following numbers are from my Master computer.)  With VEP launched, DP memory usage started out at 1.50 GB, VEP6 was 658 MB and total memory used was 8.25 GB.  After two hours, DP memory usage jumped to 16.4 GB, VEP6 jumped to 1.1 GB and total memory used was 24 GB.  I completed the same test with a new file without launching VEP6.  DP started out at 1.68 GB and total memory usage was 7.88 GB.  After two hours, DP memory usage had stayed the same at 1.68 GB and total memory usage was 8.53.  I also tested VEP6 and DP with all of the hosted plug-in instruments disabled.  Still the DP memory climbed.

MOTU said if the problem did not occur when VEP6 was not loaded, it was not a MOTU problem and there was nothing MOTU could do.  MOTU said it appeared to be a VEP6 problem.  MOTU referred me to VSL tech support.  I've been working with VSL tech support and MOTU tech support for over a week now.

Both VSL and MOTU tech support say this is not something they have heard of before.  I've tried everything to isolate the problem to no avail.

If possible, please pop open your Activity Monitors and let me know what you are seeing with your VEP and DAW.     Are you seeing any memory increase leakages or are things pretty stable?  Has anyone else experienced anything like this?  Also, please let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Thank you!
