  • Threadripper 2 Experience?

On the forum "The Sound Board" a skilled DAW builder (Jason) made a new rig with the Treadripper 2 2950X (16-core) platform. He compared to the well established i7 8700k, which still is the benchmark for not overly expensive DAW builds with a great single core speed and good real time capabilities. In many cases, this platform outperforms much more expensive systems with more cores due to the great single core speed.

Not all tests showed as much improvement of this new build as there should be in theory. DAWbench DSP 2017 only showed a 25% increase of power over the i7. Yet, with an asio buffer of 512 samples, the DAWbench VI 2017 provided almost double of the voices in Kontakt! The i7 manged up to 2400 voices streamed, while the Treadripper 2 gave way to aa staggering 4480 voices on one machine! That seems very close to (if not even better) than the DAWbench tests on massively overclocked i9 systems - yet without any overclocking ...

All this seems to suggest to me, that a TR2 2950X system would make at least a perfect VEpro slave-PC, almost replacing two i7-slaves, for a decent price (also considering the electricity bill!). The only ubknow to me is, how VEpro would perform on the AMD platform in general and specifically on TR 2. Jason used Reaper for his tests. Does anybody have experience with VEpro performance on AMD?

You can find the mentioned discussion about TR 2 here, but you have to become a member, as the forum does not (yet) show threads publicly: The Sound Board
