Who isn't just fascinated by small shiny objects?😛

Well, here's a track I composed dedicated to all the small shiny objects in the world.

    Small Shiny Objects

It's an all VSL percussive venture using all of the Vienna percussive instruments that I have (Celesta, Xylophone, Miramba, Gongs, etc.). Also it was mixed and mastered with the Vienna Suite.

The only thing that is not VSL is the drum kit which is Session Drummer I think.

Enjoy and comments welcome of course.

Sorry, I was having trouble getting the link to work earlier.  You might have to download the flash player when the site comes up. Sorry for the extra step.

Okay, the last link won't work on certain devices so, as much as I despise Soundclound, I went ahead and resurrected my account with them and posted it their as well.

    Here's the link:

    Sound Cloud Version

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Hi Jasen,

Thank you for sharing your music and keeping our dying forum alive!  I'm not qualified to offer much in the way of technical commentary on this music, but I did want to tell you I enjoyed the concept of the piece and it was fun to listen to.  I recalled your background being more popular than classical, so I admire the fact that you often listen to and comment on music that is very different from your own.  I enjoy listening to all different styles, but don't feel I can really offer insight that would be helpful/meaningful outside of music that's classical.  Anyway, it was charming and a nice exploration of the percussion collection!

    All the best,

    Dave

  • Hello Dave and a belated thank you for taking the time to listen.

Originally, I had planned this to be a Classical piece comprised of just percussive instruments (it's from a piano arrangement I composed)  I think maybe the drum kit playing the Jazzy riff shines a more Popish light on the piece.  The funny thing is the drum kit was an afterthought.  I thought it sounded a bit bland without it.

Perhaps I should consider removing it and try something else.

    Anyway, thanks again for listening

  • Interesting timbres on this piece and very well done.  Thanks for posting it.

"... our dying Forum" - Acclarion

    That is sad.

  • Small Shiny Objects... I take it it is a Musikalische Opfer by Jasen to all ladies around the world. I like the interchangeable independent lines, as well as the motley, punctuating drum kit that doesn't belong - sort of like the trumpet in The Unanswered Question, that is the most interesting bit in my view.

Insofar as the "forum dying", well, being one of the old guard here and having partaken of its peak, if it is actually dying, it does so after a very long fight with degradation in many respects - a natural death when one considers the general global musical conditions, and mostly... Actually I am not going to start a fire here as I usually do. a) It is my friend Jasen's thread, and b) I doubt it is worthwhile anymore.

P.S.: Jasen, I don't know whether the piece would benefit from a little more spacing out the stereo image. Unless your intention was to snuggle the instruments together.

I do apologize for yet another belated thank you for listening and your comments but I've been a little busy lately.

    @ William,

You mentioned the timbres and that reminded me of the VSL gongs I used. There's something enchanting about the VSL gongs and I find myself using them quite a bit.  The haunting sound they create has a soothing effect and I just love them along with the other VSL percussive instruments but those gongs really stand out for me.

Also, the Vienna Suite makes a huge difference because you can sweeten the sound without over coloring it, if that makes any sense.  Of course you can sweeten and color if that's what you want but, to me, that sounds over processed.

    @ Errikos,

Well, I do fancy myself a lady's man at times and anything I can do to impress the fairer sex is worth a shot.  Of course my wife would prefer I make the Musikalische Opfer to just her alone in which case I happily oblige by tickling the ivories for her when the mood is right.  Then after a few glasses of wine we proceed to tickle each other but I won't discuss that here because, well this ain't that kind of forum buddy😉

And on that note, I don't know if the forum is dying or if it's going through an evolutionary cycle but it does seem like many of the stalworth forum elders no longer contribute their wisdom.  It's kind of sad.  I was just thinking the other day what ever happened to DG?  He was such a treasure trove of knowledge and advice.  I miss his well informed and pithy posts.  I hope he's in good health and successful.

But I'm so glad to see that you still keep in touch with the forum because it just wouldn't be the same without you😊

  • I think DG is probably working on music rather than mouthing off here - he has a huge amount of music he has done that is really great and is probably busy with more.  Though he is truly an expert and supremely talented.

I have been tempted to quit here a number of times but have really liked meeting some like-minded people but also enjoy the incendiary posts and agitated flame wars about absurdly trivial issues.  I don't think VSL wants that but I believe it may actually increase their traffic in general, somewhat like crowds of gawkers appearing at auto accidents.

  • Thanks for the appreciation of my composer's moderate madness Jasen, I too appreciate your presence here (as well as Bill's), but I do visit the forum less and less. It's a combination of growing in years, and that the non-technical threads (subjects/comments/music) just hold no interest for me compared to those of years past. Also, the P.C. nannies bawling for moderation at the slightest provocation (as they perceive it) have withered any pleasure I have ever derived through this participation.

There are great musicians to be counted amongst fellow members here, but it only takes a few unimaginative and persistent mouse-riders to spoil the broth. I am neither going to futilely stand in the way, or be compelled to praise intellectual and musical unworthiness of the tsunamian onslaught of the vapid and the fatuous.

Errikos has a mastery of both irony and the English language that is delicious.

  • I suppose I have been in a rather foul mood since I've had major troubles with my work computer for a while now... Happy composing to the rest of you.

  • Foul mood?  I thought that was a good mood!
