Question about AMD Zen 2 - R7 3700x and R9 3900x

I asked the support staff of Vienna Symphonic Library about this question, but they don't have enough data of users using the new AMD processors. So my question still stands, is the new the zen 2 processors and PCI-E Gen 4 really worth it for Vienna Symphonic Library or should I get Intel 9th gen instead? Is single-threaded performance really better in the new AMD processors?

If any member of the VSL community could help with this question I'd be glad.

Kind Regards,

Ricardo

Hi Ricardo,

No. Intel is still ahead of this, even with AMD's 3rd gen. Should you care about this at all? I'm not so sure. The number of cores is quite important, however.

I'd say both will do the job well (I used Intel before, and then moved to AMD), but in terms of "bang for the buck" AMD 3900X is beyond competition right now. Arguably, it's beyond competition, period. And probably 3950X, which we are yet to see. Just my opinion.

Crusoe.

Hi,

http://www.scanproaudio.info/2019/07/12/amd-ryzen-3600-3700x-3900x-dawbench-tested-3-is-it-the-magic-number/

This test shows that AMD CPUs have better performance than their competitors:(3700X VS 9700K; 3900X VS 9900K). The 3700X has lower price and better audio performance than 9700K, while 3900X sold at a higher price (about 120 -150 euros higher) but as a more powerful CPU for music production than the intel 9900K.

Since the test is based on Kontakt VI, it seems to have similar result with VSLs' samples.

Sometimes single-threaded performance based on gaming can't be simply considered as a reference to music production.

If you have a small budget, AMD maybe a better choice though I agree that both AMD/Intel can do the job.

Regards,

moh
