Sorry I couldn't find the answer on the forum. I sure tried.

Anyway, I use Windows 10 and VI Pro (latest), VE (latest). Everything worked until I moved everything over to a new computer. I probably don't know the order of things to do and hope someone can set me right. Here's what I did:

Copied the folder that contains all the instrument data files to a similar folder on the new computer, and used the Directory Manager to point to that folder. It shows all the instruments there properly. But when I start Vienna Instruments Pro, no instruments are found. I see no presets, matrix, or patches.

I thought I might have to reinstall the libraries, so I downloaded them fresh and tried to install. The installer said I would have to provide the registration codes for the libraries, but when I tried, it would not run (I did find the answer to that bug on the forum), so I entered the code directly in the license manager. But then it reported that the license has already been used. It does not seem to find the information in the manager itself. But if you open the license manager, I see the licenses listed there.

This sure may not be the clearest post you've ever read, but I think you see how confused I am. I thought that after moving the files, pointing to them in the directory manager, and plugging in the dongle everything would work. What am I doing wrong, or not doing at all?

Many thanks. Hope to get back to work with this soon as possible.

Hi John,

This sounds to me like the eLicenser with the licenses is not connected to your computer. Please double check if the correct one is connected and that you can see all licenses in the eLicenser Control Center.
(Maybe you have a second one for Steinberg products?)

Best, Ben

Hi, Ben --

Many thanks for your taking the time to respond. I thought you might have something there. Although I knew that the dongle was plugged in, complete with the red LED glowing reassuringly, but I remembered that I had plugged it into a USB 3 socket. Thinking that it may not much care for that, I placed it in a USB 2 one, but alas, I have the same result: no libraries show in VI.

Also, in my case at least, if the dongle is not plugged in with the needed licenses, VI won't start at all. Same for Vienna Ensemble, Synchron player, and the rest. But they all come up, and I can play the Synchron player instruments I have (the free ones). So there must be something else. This is a fresh computer, and everything worked on my old one, but as a teacher of mine used to say, "That which is different is not the same."

So my little mind is spinning with questions about what the Synchron player works, and so does Vienna Instruments, but VI does not. I did a fresh download of VI and reinstalled it, but no banana.

If you can think of something else, I would sure appreciate your taking a moment to let me know. Also, do the VSL support people monitor this forum and respond, or do I do something different to contact them? It sure looks like it's headed that way.

Many thanks again.

John

Hi, Maestro

After looking at the licenses on the dongle, I'm not sure if the actual instrument licenses are there. I can see the programs along with "Vienna Instrument" and "Collection" lines. I had assumed these were for the instruments, but it seems like I used to actually see each instrument that was licensed on this screen. Is this what's wrong?

I'm sending a screen shot to show you what I mean.

What is even more curious to me is that I have to dongles so I can use VE on my network, and the other dongle lists exactly the same content. This is as frustrating as it gets. I tried the eLicenser "recovery" function and it reported no errors. Also, I have registered my licenses with MySteinberg. Again, it is my assumption, that this means I should be able to reload them from there if it turns out something happened to my eLicenser.

Any thoughts? Any at all would be appreciated.

Thanks again. John

Hi, Ben --

Thanks again. I think I've figured it out. Looks like pilot error yet again. When I went to the older computer and looked at the licenses there, it turns out the "missing" ones were on that dongle. My mistake was thinking that since I have "3 licences" with VE, that I could use the instruments on any of those computers. But it looks like I'm wrong on that. Is this the way it is: I can run VE on multiple computers on the network, but the instruments themselves (the libraries) can only be loaded and used from one of those machines IE: the server? Is that it?

If so, I need to see if I can shuffle the needed licenses on the the proper dongles.

Again, many thanks, though if I am wrong in my thinking, I would appreciate your dropping me a quick message. Best,

John

Hi John,

Great that you could sort this out.

Our Support-channel is via mail:

And yes, licenses are not shared in a network, so if you want to run the same products from multiple machines you need additional licenses. In this case get in touch with us via email.

Best, Ben
