I'm diving into building a new PC. Currently I'm using a i7-4790k, which has served me pretty well for the past 7 years or so, but now has reached it limits, despite fast SSD's, VE Pro and 64GB of RAM, and keeping the pc in good condition with some utility software.

It turns out that the AMD CPU's are highly regarded for music production, as well as the new 12th gen Intel CPU's. Unfortunately the latter are running pretty hot and are more power hungry, so I think I go for AMD this time, although AM4 is said to have reached its limits for being updated/ugraded, where the new Intel platform is new and will be further developed and enhanced in the future.

Anyway, the way I think about it now, is that I either go for the 5900X or 5950X, where the latter is about €230 higher in price, but has 4 extra cores and is generally faster. I've also checked the 3950X, but this one is not much cheaper ATM, so no need to look into that one for now.

The main question is: will I really benefit from those 4 extra cores (= 8 extra threads) in my DAW (Studio One 5) and Dorico, where my samples wil be hosted on the same machine in VEP, making it worth to invest the extra money? Or is the 12 core 5900X more than powerful enough so I can save the money, or invest it in faster memory f.e.?

Hi!

This highly depends on your usual workload.
Personally, at this point I would go with the 5900X and safe the €230 for a future system upgrade.

Best, Ben

Hello Ben,

Thanks for your reply.
I'm not the kind of composer working with 100's of tracks in his template, I'm more of a traditional composer so to speak, so not 30+instances in VE Pro. I already was thinking in the direction of 5900X, also beacuse tests do show some better performance with the 5950X, but it's not that this is crucial to build a modern, futureproof system. Still not sure whether to go for the Intel i9-12900 or the 5900X. Will dive into that in the near future.

That's weird, but I can read it.
It looks like a decent build! Somehow I lean to a Fractal Design case, but that's just a matter of taste, as I have one now too and am very happy with it.
I will take a look at difference in specs for the hardware between your build and the one I'm aiming at; if the price difference is to big to justify a higher investment price, I might as well copy your build. I think I will feel a huge improvement with that system compared to my own pc now. And based on that you say it runs very well, that's the best argument.

Actually, that system drive is the one I had trouble with; didn't always boot. I ended up swapping in a WD_BLACK 1TB SN750 SE NVMe, which solved the issue.

Okay, thanks for the update.
Almost all my drives are Samsung, never have any issues with then, but when your system doesn't boot, that's really frustrating.

I've checked the price for a system based on yours, but still leaning towards the Ryzen 5900X.
