  • Flanger-like sound on Synchron Elite Strings

    Hello everybody,

So I noticed that some months ago that some of the samples were sounding as if there was a flanger effect. It was really driving me crazy trying to figure this out. Sadly, I was on a tight deadline and had to make use of another library (which I was not very happy about) to meet such deadline. Now, I am on a project in wnich I was hoping these would be the main strings but, still, that flanger-like sound keeps coming up/

Has anyone experienced this? Is it bad programming?

I hear it even while using it as a standalone.

    Thanks in advance!

    O.

  • Do you use vibrato crossfade? I also have this problem. I call it phasing issue, but "flanger" is a better word to describe it. It only happens while crossfading the vibrato (no matter if senza, regular or molto).

I think it has something to do with the delays VSL has set up with the microphones. This is something they definitely should have a look at, even though this is an issue which has been mentioned some time ago and still isn't fixed.

  • Hi,

Please upload examples, wo we're on the same page.

  • Here is a short mp3. This is recorded as standalone. I just started going up the scale in articulations until I heard it.

  • Hello Oscar!

I can hear the flanging sound in your example but cannot reproduce it with the Synchron Elite Strings library. Such problems can occur when an instrument gets double-triggered (for example by getting MIDI signals from two MIDI inputs). If that is not the reason for your problem, please create a simple project with your DAW that showcases the problem and send it to support@vsl.co.at. Then we can take a closer look.

    Best regards,

  • This is exactly the sound I have, and it is only hearable in the sustain/legato patches using the vibrato crossfade – no matter if senza, regular or molto.

    It occurs when:

    • Using the sustain/legato crossfades. Curious is that it isn't automatically hearable if I use these patches, it occurs after some time of playing and using the crossfade controller.
    • Switching from other articulations to sustain/legato crossfade patch (like in the posted audio demo).

I tested with the microphones and it also happens using just one microphone position and also the room mix. But: I figured out that if I use two microphones and add a delay to one of them, the phasing is gone. Maybe it is coincidence or imagination, I don't know. But this phasing/flanger issue is really severe (as you can hear) and annoying. For me this means: I can't make use of the vibrato crossfade.

I control both dynamics and vibrato with CC1. Is this the reason? I hope not. You mean something different, don't you?

EDIT: I use a foot pedal (CC 66/67). Is the Synchron Player responding to these CCs? In general, I reroute the pedal to CC1.

  • Hi Pixelpoet1985!

I still can't reproduce flanging sounds with the Synchron Elite Strings library here. Please send a simple project made with your DAW that showcases the problem to support@vsl.co.at.

I wouldn't recommend controlling VelXF and VibratoXF with the same controller, but it shouldn't result in flanging samples.

CC66 and CC67 are not assigned in the Synchron Elite Strings presets by default. You can assign them on the CONTROL page if you want to.

    Best regards,
