  • Using MIR3D on an FX channel

    I'm starting to use a mix of Spitfire and VSL samples and finding my computer can't handle putting an instance of MIR on every channel.  So I'm sending groups of instruments to a BUS which in turn have an FX channel where I position the section as a whole.  

    The result is pretty good but wondered if anyone else does anything like this and if there's a better approach?  Not sure it matters but I'm using Studio One as my DAW.

    While this is not the most ideal, "official" way to use MIR (... which indeed would have been to use one instance for each source), it is a perfectly valid second best option - similar to ensemble recordings.

    Some random hints:

    - Use equal or similar instruments only to feed these submixes 

    - Spread your sources from hard left to hard right to give MIR the chance to pan the (virtual) ensemble properly

    - Make sure to use General Purpose Instrument Profiles to avoid unpredictable results

    - Try to keep actual soloists separated from these submixes, for better differentiation.
