  • VEP7 - Audio / Sync Dropouts Issue

Since I've upgraded to 7 from 6, Ive been experiencing a lot of problematic audio dropouts and sync dropouts from my VEP machine.

I have my VEP machine and DAW machine linked via Ethernet with dedicated IPs. I can visually see VEP kinda stutter and freeze whenever I have the dropout, and then it picks back up again streaming audio.

My CPU on both machines are totally fine, usually they peak around 30% and RAM still has plenty of room.

Im on windows on both machines, I've tried resetting both network settings, but nothing Ive tried has made any difference.

Anyone have this issue and were able to resolve it?

  • Hi David,

Hm, performance problems like that can be either hardware-related or network related. Please check:

    - Your VE Pro 7 Server settings and adjust your "Instance > Multiprocessing" settings. It's essential to finetune these settings accordingly to your specific hardware and project/template setup. (Number of "Threads per Instance")

    - What is the current audio buffer size of your audio interface/sound card set? Does setting a larger buffer size help to improve the situation?

    - Any firewall/security software/parental software, like Little Snitch, that might slow down the connection?

    https://www.vsl.info/en/manuals/vep7/network#windows-firewall

    - Are you connected via a fast enough ethernet cable (CAT6+)? Make sure to disable the Wi-Fi as latest to make sure data is not transferred there instead. Are your network adapter drivers up to date?

    - Please double-check your static IP addresses? Is the subnet mask set to "255.255.255.0"?

I hope this helps! If you have further troubles, please get in touch with us at support@vsl.co.at!

  • Hey Andreas!

    1. I tried this but the issue didnt change

    2. Its currently at 512 but Ive changed it to 1024 and 2046 and that didn't change anything either

    3. Just my regular firewall, but I've tried turning the firewall off on both machines and that didnt fix anything

    4. Yeah Im using a CAT6 cable, cant really disable the wifi because im using the ilok cloud, but all my instances are connected via ethernet 10.1.1.10. I checked the drivers and everything's up to date with them.

    5. I checked both and they seem ok, 10.1.1.6 and 10.1.1.10 both with 255.255.255.0 subnet masks set

Not sure what the issue is but it sure is frustrating :/ especially that it doesnt happen all the time, some days its ok and somedays its a nonstop issue.

  • Hi David,

I also wonder what would interfere only on some days... Any way to narrow that down to additional tasks that are running?

  • I'm going to try closing any processes next time its happening to see if there might be something causing it. It's been pretty stable the past few days though.

  • Hi David,

That's good news. Hope we can find the culprit.

Just a thought: Could it be that you are using VE Pro 7.1.1427? We have actually removed this version and it will make sense to uninstall it and then reinstall 1406 in your Vienna Assistant.

  • Hey Paul,

So I tried cleaning up my VEP machine, removing any misc softwares / cfosspeed / any network programs that werent needed as well as closing all tasks possible except vienna, but it didnt seem to fix the issue.

Could it be that I'm using the iLok cloud on this computer? I dont have a dongle for it. On my old VEP machine I had the license directly on the computer, but when I setup the new machine I just put it into the cloud and run it that way.

Also, I'm presently on 1406 atm, I hadnt updated to 1427

  • Hi David,

Yes, your licenses are currently stored in the iLok cloud.

BUT you can only access one VE Pro 7 license with an iLok cloud, so you will need at least one ilok key to set up a system with 2 VE Pro Servers.

  • Hi, I thought I would check-in regrading your progress on this. I too am having the same issues. Beyond the dropouts, my DAW will sometimes sit there spinning (beach ball) and VEP on the networked computer will become non responsive. Sometimes it will recover after many seconds (30-120 seconds). This happens frequently with ver 7. I also had no issues with version 6.

I can do a continuous ping from the DAW computer to the networked computer with no pack drops. Also, as I'm RDP'd into the networked PC, everything else seems fine, except for VEP.

    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Hi MarkK,

  • Hi Paul,

Thank you. I will send an email to the address you listed.

    Thanks again,
    Mark

  • One thing I forgot to try was to set my buffer size to a larger number. So far this morning I have not had any problems. Let me monitor it for a while. If that seems to have done the trick, I will report it back here.

  • I am pretty sure that was the problem. My system ran all day yesterday with no issues.

    Thanks,,
    Mark
