  • Percussion, Sibelius, and VI Series instruments

    Happy new year!
My current learning curve in composing is writing for percussion, and I'm finding that the existing VI Sibelius "instruments" aren't always exactly where I want to go. My focus is on traditional orchestral percussion instances (NOT drum kits), and almost all the stuff I'm finding is about the latter -- not unrelated, but not exactly either! So I have a general question:
Does it make sense to build custom matrix presets with exactly the sounds I'd like to leverage in a given stave? Or should I focus on drum mapping directly in Sibelius? I know very little about either, since the existing instrument matrices have worked pretty well for more traditional instruments -- just trying to decide where to start my learning assault!
For a particular (and some context), I'm currently working on a piece that uses a set of toms. I'm using "Concert toms full" in the Sibelius matrix collection as my instrument, and that matrix lacks some things, such as sticks on drum rims. I could add the comparable snare sound, but where and how!
If there's tutorials or documentation that specifically applies to this that I'm missing, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Jeffrey!

Happy new year to you too.

I have seen in our records that you have registered the VI Percussion collection. This collection can be used with the sound set "VE Percussion". All details on how to trigger the various instruments and articulations with Sibelius can be found here:

  • Andi:
Thanks, as always. Interestingly, in that list, a lot of the possibilities I'd love to have with concert toms (mallet options, rim) are listed under roto toms, but not concert toms. Roto toms aren't really the pitches I want (at least what I'm hearing so far), so I'm still at a quandary.

  • Hello Jeffrey!

The mallet options and rim hits you are looking for have not been recorded for the VI concert toms.

You might be interested in our Synchron Percussion series. "Synchron Drums I" includes concert toms with mallet options and rim hits.
