This is my first post here, so I would like to briefly introduce myself.

First of all: Since my English quickly reaches its limits, I will write in German and then have translated my articles by Google - which unfortunately does not rule out possible translation errors.

I've been working with VS Libraries for about two years and have now reached a point where I would like to exchange ideas with other users and would like feedback on my productions.

Since not only my knowledge of English is limited, but also my playing skills on the piano ("my" instrument is the guitar), I usually start new projects with Sibelius and Vienna Ensemble Pro and then revise them with Logic Pro and Vienna MIR Pro 3D .

Thanks to the always helpful and friendly support here and thanks to some online tutorials, I have now been able to overcome some hurdles that initially seemed insurmountable in order to use the extremely complex software sensibly.

I would be happy if an exchange with you was possible.

And the support team would certainly be happy too, as they would be spared a little from my frequent inquiries. ;-)

Now for my two versions of "Stella By Starlight" - originally composed as film music by Victor Young in 1944:

Both are based on a recording by Ella Fitzgerald on the 1961 album "Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!" and consequently do without extensive variations and improvisations.

My version 2 differs from version 1 only by a third chorus, the first half of which serves as a playback for a guitar solo.

Both versions have the instrumentation as follows:

- Flute 1 / Single Instruments

- Trumpet in C (muted) / Single Instruments

- Tenor Trombones / Single Instruments

- Concert Guitar / SYzd Plucked Instruments

- Upright Bass / SYzd Plucked Instruments

- Vienna Jazz Drums / Single Instruments

Several attempts to replace the "Single Instruments“-brass and -flute with comparable ones from the "SYnchroni-zed" or "Synchron" packages did not convince me, as these sounded more distant and are probably more suitable for classical music than jazz.

In order to be able to use the key of B flat major, I extended the flute's pitch range by a whole tone step downwards and corrected the "latencies" that this apparently caused with some tones with the help of Logic Pro.

The recording room of the Teldex studio in Berlin was used as the virtual room; here my configuration:

- Reduction of the low frequencies of the "Upright Bass"

- "POP" Venue with 20% "Global Dry/Wet Offset"

- Main Microphone, Position 1 - Center

- Secondary Microphone, Position 2 - Control Room

- Room and close mics for the drums

Sehr geehrte Foristen,

dies ist mein erster Beitrag hier, weswegen ich mich ich kurz vorstellen möchte.

Vorab: Da mein Englisch schnell an Grenzen kommt, werde ich meine Beiträge in deutscher Sprache verfassen und anschließend von Google übersetzen lassen – was mögliche Übersetzungsfehler leider nicht ausschließt.

Ich arbeite seit etwa zwei Jahren mit VS-Libraries und bin nun an einem Punkt angekommen, an dem ich mich gerne mit anderen Nutzern austauschen möchte und mir Feedback zu meinen Produktionen wünsche.

Da nicht nur meine Kenntnisse in Englisch begrenzt sind, sondern auch meine Spielfertigkeiten auf dem Klavier („mein“ Instrument ist die Gitarre), beginne ich neue Projekte meist mit Sibelius und Vienna Ensemble Pro und überarbeite sie anschließend mit Logic Pro und Vienna MIR Pro 3D.

Dank des stets hilfreichen und freundlichen Supports hier und dank einiger Online-Tutorials konnte ich nun schon manche, zunächst unüberwindbar scheinende Hürde nehmen, um die ausgesprochen komplexe Software sinnvoll zu nutzen.

Beide orientieren sich an einer Aufnahme von Ella Fitzgerald auf dem 1961 erschienenen Album „Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!“ und verzichten folglich auf umfangreiche Variationen und Improvisationen.

Meine Fassung 2 unterscheidet sich von Fassung 1 lediglich durch einen dritten Chorus, dessen erste Hälfte als Playback für ein Gitarrensolo dient.

Mehrere Versuche, die „Single Instruments“-Bläser durch vergleichbare aus den „SYnchroni-zed“- oder „Synchron“-Paketen zu ersetzen, haben mich nicht überzeugt, da diese distanzierter klangen und sich vermutlich mehr für Klassische Musik als für Jazz eignen.

Um die Tonart B-Dur verwenden zu können, habe ich den Tonumfang der Flöte um einen Ganztonschritt nach unten erweitert und die offenbar dadurch bei manchen Tönen entstehenden „Latenzen“ mit Hilfe von Logic Pro korrigiert.

Als virtueller Raum kam der Aufnahmesaal des Teldex-Studios Berlin zum Einsatz; hier meine Konfiguration:

- Reduktion der tiefen Frequenzen des „Upright Bass“

- „POP“-Venue mit 20% „Global Dry/Wet Offset“

- Main Microphone, Position 1 - Center

- Secondary Microphone, Position 2 - Control Room

thank you for the message and for the note regarding SoundCloud.

Since my productions are non-commercial, so far I'm fine with others enjoying them or using them for themselves.

My original goal was to someday make music with real people again (jazz and bossa nova in chamber music formations) and until then to work with the VSL samples as a substitute. In the meantime, however, these are no longer just a means to an end for me, but also an end in themselves and an almost inexhaustible playground of sounds and combinations. I also appreciate the opportunity to practice and improvise with my own arrangements and playbacks in a virtual band.

I would be interested to know how your productions for pop orchestra sound. Is there a link to this that you can post or send me?

Finally, a word for those who are reading along silently:

I am aware that musicians prefer to express themselves in tones rather than in words. However, since the great silence in this thread is possibly due to the imperfection of my two "Stella by starlight" productions, a few words of self-criticism below:

The music sounds very sterile and not alive yet. Therefore, next I will try to post-process the dynamics with the "Velocity" and "Expression" parameters; and possibly the timbre with "Timbre". Also, I'd love to record the tune "live" once I have a weighted master keyboard instead of my current "toy" (CME XkeyAir 25). The melody (flute, trumpet) should at least partially detach from the beat (guitar, bass, drums) in order to sound more jazzy.

In any case, I would be happy about an exchange and further ideas for optimizing my music.

vielen Dank für die Nachricht und für den Hinweis bezüglich SoundCloud.

Da meine Produktionen nicht kommerziell sind, ist es bislang für mich in Ordnung, wenn andere daran Gefallen finden oder sie für sich nutzen.

Mein ursprüngliches Ziel war es, irgendwann wieder mit realen Menschen zusammen Musik zu machen (Jazz und Bossa Nova in kammermusikalischer Besetzung) und bis dahin ersatzweise mit den VSL-Samples zu arbeiten. Inzwischen sind diese für mich jedoch nicht mehr nur Mittel zum Zweck, sondern auch Selbstzweck und eine beinahe unerschöpfliche Spielwiese aus Klängen und Kombinationen. Zudem schätze ich die Möglichkeit, mit eigenen Arrangements und Playbacks einer virtuellen Band üben und improvisieren zu können.

Es würde mich interessieren, wie Ihre Produktionen für Pop-Orchester klingen. Gibt es dazu einen Link, den Sie veröffentlichen oder mir schicken können?

Abschließend noch ein Wort für die still Mitlesenden: Dass Musiker sich lieber in Tönen als in Worten äußern, ist mir bewusst. Da das große Stillschweigen in diesem Thread aber möglicherweise der Unvollkommenheit meiner beiden „Stella by starlight“-Produktionen geschuldet ist, nachfolgend ein paar Worte der Selbstkritik:

Die Musik klingt sehr steril und lebt noch nicht. Deshalb werde ich als nächstes versuchen, die Dynamik mit den Parametern „Velocity“ und „Expression“ nachzubearbeiten; und evtl. die Klangfarbe mit „Timbre“. Außerdem würde ich die Melodie gerne „live“ einspielen, sobald mir ein Master-Keyboard mit gewichteter Tastatur anstelle meines derzeitigen „Spielzeugs“ (CME XkeyAir 25) zur Verfügung steht. Dabei sollte sich die Melodie (Flöte, Trompete) zumindest teilweise vom Takt lösen (Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug), um mehr Jazz-gemäß zu klingen.

Über einen Austausch und weitere Ideen zur Optimierung meiner Musik würde ich mich jedenfalls freuen.
