  • Quad Core Intel Xeon

    Hello friends,

I am thinking about buying a workstation with Quad Core Intel Xeon 2,33 GHz and with 16 GB Ram. This system need Windows XP Professional X64Bit Edition. Does anybody has any experiences with this operating system? Will VSL and other musical software work on this platform?
Thank you in advance for your answers

  • pavel, as far as i know only sonar is running on 64bit native and of course you need 64bit audio drivers for your soundcard, the ViennaInstruments 64bit is unreleased.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Christian - thanks for the answer. Does another way exist how to encrease a power of computer. Now I am working on two computers, but it is not very comfortable - especially when I am going to studio for mixing. My idea was to have everything in one computer but for this I need minimum 8 GB of RAM. Now I am working with 4 GB (on each comp I have 2 GB) and when I am making large orchestra I used to be out of limit (with CPU and with RAM). Could you recommend me anything?

    Thank you a lot

  • pavel, for the machines with 8GB RAM capacity, many users are putting Plogue Bidule to work as a standalone host for running multiple instances of the Cube outside of the main DAW-- in addition to running plugin instances inside the DAW.

For that matter, users are also running multiple standalone instances of the Cube outside of their main DAW. This is done by making copies of the Standalone verion which run independently of one another.

In either case, the 3GB limit is "per app" these days, so *theoretically* you should be able to get considerablly more running on a 4x CPU. I stop short of suggesting that a full 15GB should be expected, but that's the idea in theory with a machine loaded with a full 16GB of RAM.

All on one computer? That's been a dream for so many of us for so long. it may take a while yet before we get there.

JWL what's the real world performance with this setup? Can you blaze away with lot's of polyphony etc.? Is this now a common practise setup with pros who are doing very work intensive seq's?

  • JWL, the limit is 3GB total under Windows XP at this point, not per program; anything over that isn't even recognized by the OS, and from what I understand the main reason people put in 4GB rather than 3 is to keep the RAM all the same (although I vaguely remember reading something cm wrote about 4GB giving slightly better performance than 3 for other reasons, but I could be wrong?).

It's only Macs that can run stand-alone programs outside the DAW to gain more than 3GB or so of memory access, and there's absolutely no point in putting 16GB in a PC.

I also haven't read any reports from Mac users with more than 8GB in a machine (i.a Mac Pro). The processor may get bogged down after a certain number of instances.

    Thanks, Nick.

I knew about the PC issue, but 3GB has been a magic number on Macs also. Thanks goodness for standalone, nonetheless.

I'll check another forum where one member has a Quad PPC to see how much RAM he's running. It makes sense that 16G would bog the CPU with instances.

So, under what conditions would you say that 16GB RAM makes sense, even beyond the realm of VIs? From what I understand, no app on the Mac will access any more than 4GB and probably closer to 3GB by some accounts.

I'm just trying to gather all the real-world and official benchmark data I can. As usual, the truth lives somewhere in between....

    Cheers.

  • On a slightly related subject there has been one report (so I can't confirm it) of running X64 on a slave PC with FX-Teleport and loading 8GB samples. In this case it might be possible to run the Host as Host and Slave, thereby doing it all on one computer. How the mis-match of 32bit and 64bit apps would work I haven't got my hear around, but I'm thinking of putting together a 64bit slave for when I'm travelling around doing demos. that way I could actually use the Cube, rather than small parts of it. It also means that the laptop running the whole shebang wouldn't have to be that powerful.

Nick - window can address 4 gb of ram - but normally it divides this into
2 gb application space and 2 gb system space. Setting the 3 gb switch
alters this to 3 gb application space and 1 gb system space.
Having 4 gb will enable you to use the 3 gb application space in full
( at least in theory ). Having only 3 gb of ram means that system memory
will use some of this - so it makes perfectly sense to install 4 gb ram.

  • In practice this means about 100MB extra of sample loading. However, it might mean that other services are not starved of RAM.

Isn't it more like 250MB extra? Usually people with 3 gb reports about
2.5gb sample loading, while 4gb people reports close to 2.8gb

  • It all depends on how stable you want the system to be.
