And Yes, a good point, 32GB might be overkill for the time being.

I'm looking into other options, including a nice 12GB i7 system.

Hi again Mahlon and DG,

I do know a thing of two about silencing computers.

The problem is that I record and mix in the same room.

My current computer is already here too.

(very quiet - mobo and VGA fanless, big Zalman cooler on CPU, quiet PSU etc...)

Although it is "silent", it is not really - if you know what I mean.

So I don't want to have 3 of these around.

A "silent" 8GB computer would be about 1080 euro excl VAT from my supplier.

(This is without screen, mouse or keyboard of course)

The set is built around a core2DUO E8400 45nm 3GHz CPU and 8GB of 1333 DDR3 OCZ Ram.

Also included is a silent Antec case and dito PSU, a silent CPU cooler, fanless VGA,

a Win64 Home Vista license, DVD-drive and 1TB Samsung hard disk.

In the mean time, my supplier also specified that the problem has more to do with OCZ than with the mobo.

So was happy to hear that ;)

I'll be trying to find out what a 16GB silent server machine would cost in the coming days.

Those mobo's don't seem to be so happy - fully loaded.

(my hardware shop warned me on this topic)

What machine is best to host 3x VE3?

I have the Orchestral cube, so lots of delicious samples. 

It figures the need is either for a Mac Pro

or a Win64 (XP or Vista?) system based on a server mobo etc.

Price-wise it's probably the windows system. 

Any suggestions on that one?

Which mobo (server or normal?), CPU, Ram (speed? DDR2 probably?)

Or would 8GB be sufficient?

Well I'm about to upgrade my setup.

I've browsed the forum quite a bit, but couldn't find a clear answer.

The question is;

Can I use Sibelius 5 to trigger VE3 through Nuendo 4?

The setup in detail would be;

* Main computer = an 8core Mac Pro

   This one is running SIBELIUS 5 --> triggering VE3 running under NUENDO 4.

* Second computer (PC running 64bit Vista) --> 3x VE3 as slaves.

Is there some kind of virtual MIDI cable needed?

Anyone with experience on this topic?

Hope this is not old news, but I've noticed this:

Writing for string orchestra, one usually needs violin 1, violin 2, violas, celli and bass.

In VE2, one needs to load 2 times the samples of the orchestral violins.

(let's assume the use is for monophonic legato samples)

As a VI however, It does not load the same samples 2 times.

So by loading two VIs by the same name, only 1 VI will need to occupy the RAM.

So in this last case, VI draws samples from the same place in RAM, which saves lots of RAM.

This is a major draw back for VE to me, since my RAM is most limited.

Or is there a workaround in VE?

I hope I'm wrong somewhere, but this is how it looks.

In the bundle, a CD rom is included with library install software.

It might already be on your computer in fact.

It is called "Library Installer"

From launching that app, you just select the package file on your first Brass 1 DVD,

than select where you want to install the samples, and off  you go ;)

I ordered the Symphonic Cube 1 month ago, it still hasn't arrived.

Starting to get a bit worried here... is this normal?

Sounds great!

Since you want some feedback, here are some "remarks" ;)

- The mix is a bit to "dark" sounding here.

- The end notes of the horns around 1:20 seem cut-off (a bit unnatural).

- After the drumloop comes in, it soon dissappears in the orchestral crescendo; this didn't feel right for me. What you might wanna do is ride the volume fader of that track, let it come up aligned with the orchestra, or even cut it for a couple of bars. It could also use some appropriate compression that loop - well, in my opinion anyway. ;)

Just some ideas here, it already sounds very good!

Curious how it works with the images of the trailer.

To my ears you're 80% there.

On the webpage of the Symphonic Cube it is stated in "system requirements", that one needs a Vienna Key.

However, the distributor says it is included in the bundle.

Does this depend on the distributor?

The Commit Charge in Task Manager is 796M as I'm running

Nuendo at this moment with some plugins and softsynths.

Both my Total- & Available Virtual Memory (2 and 1.96GB) are the same as your screen shot.

Sounds great, really helpfull.

- That Seagate disk was looking most interesting indeed, but is a bit too small when I consider buying more bundles from VSL. That's why I was thinking of a 1TB raid disk array; probably faster loading times and bigger area for the same (or better) price. Great to know that the buffer size doesn't really matter for VSL :) And good to have it confirmed that I should keep my music/audio project files on another disk!

- My Nuendo serial number is somewhere around 497.000... this means trouble?

(I really want to avoid having another dongle; there is already an iLok and no more free USB ports at the back)

- My physical total ram is 4GB, augmented to 5GB listed is task manager, but listed 2,93GB in "System Properties". I was referring to the 3GB switch, which I might want to play with one of the days... I've already come across the big post here on the forum and I'll have a long read from that ;)

- On the CPU duo or quad topic; yeah it doesn't seem to approve as much as it is supposed to. However Nuendo would perform better, even if "only" 50%... Hmmm I might wait with the upgrade of CPU untill I run into trouble ;)

Just wanted to check some "details" with all you experienced Vienna Symphonic Librairians! ;)

- To store the sample library of the Symphonic Cube, I am planning dual 500GB SATA hard drives in RAID mode (1TB total) for fast file transfer. Is this a correct approach? I'm going for cost-effective-and-pretty-silent Samsung SATA II 16MB 7200rpm 8.9ms UDMA drives. Or is 32MB buffer more recommended?

- On the Vienna Key topic; as I own Nuendo V3.2, can the VSL licence join that dongle? (I'm pretty sure it does, but just wanna check.)

I am running Windows XP Home, 32bit, 4GB RAM installed (3 usable as we know).

Am running Nuendo V3.2 as main host DAW and sometimes Sibelius 4.

My motherboard is an ASUS P5B-E with an intel 6600 core duo CPU (quad core soon).
