1.Vienna Ensemble Routing to Reaper 5/18/2012 11:35:57 AM

Hi Christian,

As a fellow Reaper user, maybe I can help.

If I understand you correctly, you can do it as follows:

1. Set up your Vienna Ensemble instance with all of the instruments assigned to various channels as desired.

2. Open the I/O routing window (on either the Vienna Ensemble track or one of your destination instrument tracks). It should be on the track control panel. In the default theme, it should appear as a square "I/O" icon between the track name and the track fader.

3. For argument's sake, I'll assume you opened the I/O on the Vienna Ensemble track (it is easier to do many at once that way).

Under "- Receives -" click on "Add new receive..." and select your other track with the MIDI on it. If you do it from the MIDI track instead, you need to do the same thing but under "- Sends -".

4. You should now have additional options appearing just below the menu you clicked on. The one you want to focus on is the MIDI (bottom right) part. Change the destination channel to the relevant channel you would like to use in Vienna Ensemble.

5. [Optional] If you like, you can also click on the left Audio menu (probably looking like "1/2") and choose "None". Then the MIDI icon turns green, which tells you it's a MIDI-only connection. This step is entirely optional.

6. Add another Receive until you have all of the tracks there.

Then you should have instruments happily feeding MIDI into Vienna Ensemble.

Please let me know if you have any problems. It should be fairly straightforward once you get the hang of it, as Reaper's routing is incredibly flexible and powerful.

All the best,

Julio

2.Any chance of having extra slot control options? 5/17/2012 9:26:42 PM

Hi there,

I am really enjoying the evolving features of Vienna Instruments PRO 2. Thanks so much for the fantastic updates. Party!!!

There is one thing that would really improve my workflow, which would be the ability to assign (e.g.) CCs to traverse between slots of an instrument, much as the X and Y cells work: in other words, a kind of Z axis. In fact, there are so many different articulations available in VSL that I would probably enjoy U, V and W axes as well! Big Smile

Am I correct in thinking that the current implementation has two main slot options: slots as layers (with voicing control where appropriate) and crossfades between pairs of slots accord to the assigned CC?

The reason this would help me is that I have been programming a script for pre-recorded MIDI whereby CC values are produced based on the note length/overlap from last note/interval from last note. There are other features too, such as automatic velocity and expression curves where desired.

I currently have it set up so that keyswitches trigger different matrices. Using strings as an example: arco (including automated short notes, legato, portamento), pizzicato, tremolo etc. Then I assign length-controlled and overlap-controlled CCs to the X and Y. It would be great to have the option of using the interval-controlled CC (or velocity, length, etc. as per usual) in the slots, so it could automatically switch between performance trill and legato fast, for example, based on the intervals involved. i.e. more than the maximum trill interval triggers the legato fast, the trill patch plays in the trill zone, while the same note triggers note repetitions.

Do you think it would be possible to add this feature in a future version? I would be extremely grateful. Or can you think of a way to get this to work with the current feature set?

Many thanks,

Julio

Thanks Colin and Julian. This is very reassuring information! Smile
4.Time required for keyswitch? 12/12/2008 7:32:01 PM

Hi there folks.

I'm currently working on an approach to translate different MIDI channels into keyswitches, and I'm wondering: is there a rule of thumb regarding how long it takes for keyswitches to become active? (in milliseconds, samples, or what-have-you)

Also, what happens in the mean time, during that split second, if other note_on messages are sent?

Can that mangle things, or is it simply a queue system, with events processed in a timely fashion?

Thanks,

Julio

5.47 new download instruments online 7/28/2008 1:51:03 AM

Great news. I too am very interested in the strings department: being able to purchase a download/DVDs of all available articulations for individual instruments (eg solo violin, cello section) would be sensational!

6.Separate folder options for x86 and x64 VST plugin installers? 7/28/2008 1:39:46 AM

Hi there.

I recently started running both 32- and 64-bit sequencers on my PC system. When installing Vienna Ensemble/Vienna Instruments (I have Special Edition), there is only one folder option for the VST plugins. It would be lovely to have the option of installing the x86 plugin in one folder and the x64 in another, so that the hosts aren’t forced to see incompatible plugins/filter them out etc. As it stands, I cut-and-pasted the x64 plugins somewhere else, and it’s working fine, but it would be really nice to see this feature built in to the next installer version.

Thanks,

Julio Smile

7.Power Velocity Control (PVC): potential feature request 6/12/2008 10:42:02 AM

Hi again. I have been having some further thoughts in this department.

Additional control in the above velocity FR could include the option of reordering segments, for whatever reason (e.g. allowing the splicing of alternating patches along the velocity spectrum), and the ability to fine-tune overlapping zones where more than one patch will sound, with or without crossfading.

Which brings me to my second point: velocity semi-crossfade. This halfway option means the initial velocity of each note is dictated by the note-on attack, but quickly resetting (possibly with user-determined shape and speed) to the governing MIDI controller data afterwards.

Any takers?

8.Cannot create plugin error 6/12/2008 10:27:26 AM

Are you trying to load 32bit plugs into the 64bit version of VE? If so, you can't. You need to use 64bit versions, which may or may not be available. Contact the plugin developer to find out.

Thanks for the reply DG.

Yes, that's exactly what I've been trying to do! Big Smile

What is surprising is that it had been working for me earlier: I remember triple-checking it at the time (64-bit service and host running some massive memory madness™ with my 32-bit plugins happily in tow) because it seemed too good to be true. I suppose it has decided to come down to earth since then. Very strange. Ok, I'll switch to 32-bit then.

All the best.

9.Cannot create plugin error 6/12/2008 4:26:43 AM

Hi. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and have started experiencing strange problems when trying to load VST plugins in the effects or sends of Vienna Ensemble (64-bit), for reverb etc.

Instead of loading happily, it displays the following message:

Error

Cannot create plugin <plugin name>.

OK

None of my VST plugins will work. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

The 32-bit version is fine. There's something odd too: 64-bit VE displays all installed 32-bit VSTs, whereas 32-bit VE only shows the non-VSTi ones (which makes sense, I suppose). Is there anything funny going on there?

Thanks,

Julio Smile

10.Power Velocity Control (PVC): potential feature request 6/5/2008 6:25:17 AM

After tinkering around with a few 3D instrument matrices, I had some thoughts about how one could possibly increase the flexibility of VSL even further.

Here's an example to illustrate:

One column is set up with string patches: sustains in 1A, fortepiano in 1B and sforzato in 1C.
V-SPAN is set to velocity.

Any thoughts on the viability/usability of this?

12.Pre-fader send option in Vienna Ensemble update? 6/3/2008 3:14:41 AM
Hello team.

I just love using my new Vienna Instruments via the Vienna Ensemble VST host. I'm hoping for the option of pre-fader sends for reverb etc (as described in the video tutorial series). Is this something that will be added in future?

Keep up the great work.
13.Special Edition DVDs vs download products 5/19/2008 9:05:40 AM

Thanks Christian, it's great to be here.

You are right, of course: in a rather careless display, I had added the PLUS libraries onto the download total. I'll make sure I have plenty of disk space available when the time comes.

Great news! Thank you so much for clearing this up. Smile

14.Special Edition DVDs vs download products 5/19/2008 1:33:40 AM

Hi there fine forum folk. I’ve decided to start my VSL collection and have a few questions regarding the download versions of VSL SE.

Are the download products essentially the same as the corresponding DVD libraries, in terms of the number of samples/articulations etc, or are they cut-down/altered versions? I appreciate that the licence structure is different, having one for each part rather than the whole kaboodle, but any clarification on this point would be gratefully received.

I ask because of two observations:

1. The total download size of all SE libraries is about 42GB, compared to the 54GB footprint of the DVD collection: is the difference in size compensated for by some (partial) decompression during installation?

2. As I understand it, the DVD versions contain both the Standard and Extended libraries, which are installed together because they cannot be separated. This got me wondering about how different the structure must be for the download versions. Does this also mean that the samples are not as efficiently accessed/managed in the download version, or do you have to download and install both to get the Standard to work?

There was also mention of potential upgrade paths for SE users to other libraries later this year (around Q3 2008): would these apply to the download customers as well? Of course, I'm only thinking in terms of the libraries that already have some prior investment: e.g. SE Strings (Standard+Extended) then SE+ add-ons (all four of these being downloaded), then getting some VI Strings later. Would this work, or does one need to purchase the DVDs?

Another thought would be that if they are considerably different, then maybe once all orchestral

Ideally I would like to be able to purchase and download incrementally, building up the collection as needed (SE/SE+/VI etc), if that's going to be feasible.

Many thanks.
